Luton, Hitchin, Milton Keynes loss of service

Anyone else still (17/12/03) suffering? The server status page claims the problem has been resolved, but a recorded message on their 'phone support line indicates otherwise.

Many URLs are unreachable, with generally slow browsing anyway.

Re: Luton, Hitchin, Milton Keynes loss of service

If you are connecting via the Luton inktomi1-ltn.server.ntl.com server that may be your problem.
Its been slow for over a month now.

Try changing proxy to inktomi2//3//4 That may help.

3 is pants as well. I'm using one in Cardiff that the helpdesk gave me the IP addy for. Much better.

Luton area network is working fine, my ping times were coming in at 15ms and below, but browsing was the problem, the transparant proxy switch fixed it.

Supposedly the guy logged a fault, but...

Re: Luton, Hitchin, Milton Keynes loss of service

Many thanks for the assistance guys - better speeds achieved.

Still not perfect though. Problem with specifying different proxy is that it needs to be done for every application on every operating system on every machine behind my router. It isn't just port 80 web traffic that is slow too.

Don't ntl have any form of load-balancing? If luton-1 has been so poor for so long (I've been away for three months), why on Earth haven't they fixed it?

Hey Roland

Do what I do. If you have a computer that operates as a gateway install a proxy server. Point all your machines at the proxy then set the parent proxy on the proxy server to go the transparent cache of your choice. This way you only have one setting to change !!! :-)

How comes the proxys in this list are not like the one I have with 7 numbers in and a port 4 number? I presume my net connection is just as safe using a proxy given to me? As the one I have has increased my surfing speed by 100 times - superb!

I was thinking the same. Internet explorer requires a dotted quad IP address and port 8080 not a name.

The info you are using is correct and safe. The info on the list of names needs converting using a DNS to find the IP address it refers to. That or NTL fixing all of them so you don't have to specify!

Sorry I should have explained in the PM the numbers I sent are the untranslated address of one of the NTL proxies I knew worked well in our area. Effectively the numbers are just what translates to the "worded" address from the list and as stated you need to use the numbers when updating the Lan proxy settings in internet options.

Glad it worked well for you BTW I'm back surfing at full speed now too thanks to using the same proxy.

Re: Luton, Hitchin, Milton Keynes loss of service

Open a command prompt :-

Type nslookup then a space and the proxy you want to resolve. This will give you the ip. ---- Providing NTL's dns server are working ! ;-)
