faulty gfx card???

hi all
as previous posted I had just formatted and reinstalled Xp on my machine.
The reason for this was that everytime I played a movie, game or anything like that, the display went completely black and PC locked up. I would have to manually power off and back on again.
at first I thought it might have been a problem with the OS, or softwre hence I flattened it, adn reinstalled everything agian.
Still issue persists.
I have the nvidia 5500 256MB card and problem happens with original drivers and latest drivers from Nvidia. anytime I now try to play a video, from my PC or web - PC just crashes with a black screen on monitor( as if in Standby mode). If using Skype video, the system really grinds to a halt, until i stop the video.
any body have any ideas?

The system was workign grand for the past 18 months and has only started to happen.

Re: faulty gfx card???

If it crashes during basic 2d acceleration, like playing a video... Then i'd say the problem more likely lies within DirectX... what version of that are you running, and have you tried upgrading/rolling back?

Re: faulty gfx card???

I'd agree that its the graphics card. I had a similar problem a few months back. Replaced card and everything has been fine since

Re: faulty gfx card???

I had the same problem with the new nvidia drivers....try installing older drivers for it. I put 84.21 on instead of the latest from the nvidia website. http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/8...glish_whql.exe
That was the file i used and now it works perfectly.

Re: faulty gfx card???

at least replacing the card won't cost much... if you're happy with that type of card, you should be able to replace it for about £20.

Re: faulty gfx card???

hi all, back again, same problem.
problem is now getting worse, when I turned the PC on last night very strange things started to happen. The pc got to the desktoptried opening web browser, screen went off(black) and back again - nothing would move, screen went off again(black) and came on again and was able to move, suddenly BSOD appeared with something to do with teh nvdisp4( or something like that) and restarte continully, as soon as it got to the desktop BSOD, restart continually.
Managed to get to Safe mode eventually after several lock ups while loading. While in Safe mode had a flutter around.
Driver is the Latest NVIDIA driver
DirectX is also latest.

Uninstalled teh Latest version of the Drivers and installed the set that came with teh PC - same thing happening when getting to the Desktop BSOD.
Any one any other Ideas, I am fed up flattening the thing.

Re: faulty gfx card???

If your've tried different drivers it's unlikley to be that so you have to start looking at the hardware. Does the card have cooling and if so does the fan work? Is the gPU firmily seated on the motherboard, and indeed all other cards?

An updated driver for the motherboard as opposed to a driver for the graphics card, ie fixing any issues with how the card integrates with the mobo as opposed to fixing any issues on the card itself.

You need to know the motherboard model to determine which chipset you're using, e.g. VIA, then you can check whether there is an update available.
