network needs reshared every re-boot

simple problem to explain my pc and my brothers laptop are networked via a router not the ntl modem so my pc needs to be on for him to get internet.

now every time i switch my pc off the settings seem to be forgotten or something and i need to go to network connections and unshare then reshare my internet connection for my brother to be able to access the net

any ideas how i can get it so i dont have to unshare/reshare every time i reboot my pc?? cause we used to have the same setup and it worked perfectly

Re: network needs reshared every re-boot

You have a router, and your PC needs to be on for him to connect. Something's wrong with your setup, as you shouldn't need to use internet connection sharing, which is what your post implies.

Should be modem <> router (WAN port)

Router (LAN port #1) <> PC #1 (ethernet)
Router (LAN port #2) <> PC #2 (ethernet)

power everything off, rearrange your wiring as above, power on modem, let settle, router, let settle, then PCs.

Re: network needs reshared every re-boot

sorry ive used the wrong wordong which might be confusing sorry when i said router i should have said switch by which i mean i plug my LAN cable into the switch and 4 other ethernet devices can be plugged into it to create the network... when i said i dont use the ntl modem i meant i dont plug it straight into teh switch it has to run through my pc as it is set up as a USB modem not Ethernet because we couldnt change as the NTL software messed up or something....

SO it Goes

NTL Modem > My PC > Ethernet Switch > Other Devices including my bros laptop

Re: network needs reshared every re-boot

hmm, no idea why internet connection sharing should not remember the settings, or drop something, but maybe it's related to the issues you also had trying to get ethernete rather than USB connectivity.

You could try deleting the entire network connection and associated drivers from the windows control panel > system > devices > hardware, reboot and reload (current version previously downloaded from the net). Have a look to at any firewall or antivuirus software you are running.

I'd have another go at getting ethernet running. Remember you must reboot the modem (power off poweron) when changing anything that is connected to it, whether USB or ethernet, and any redundant cable should be unplugged from it. You shoudn't need any ntl software for ethernet to work. On the basis that ethernet will work (and if it won't phone ntl to send you a different modem, because it should), get yourself a router. If you need a switch the number of things you are wanting to use would be better served with proper network layout.
