ntl use what is known as a "transparent" proxy, basically its a mid-way point between you, and the internet, it gets the webpages for you, then transmits them to you, in thoery, its quicker than not using one, in reality its hit and miss, anyway, some proxys are faster than others, and by setting them manually, you can often sort browsing issues, like the one you currently have.
