Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

tests carried out between 11pm and 2am.. averages are..
0.73 Mbps, 1.4 Mbps, 0.27 Mbps, 1.08 Mbps, 2.5 Mbps, 2.12 Mbps, 2.52 Mbps, 1.38 Mbps, 2.07 Mbps, 1.59 Mbps, 1.63 Mbps (in order but not regular intervals)

(for those looking for the address) using homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.marsden/newspeedtest.html

after doing the first few i was a bit shocked to see when i visited 192.168.100.1 that i *had* actually been upgraded. not even managing to sustain 300Kb/s on a 4Mb line! and now i have to pay them more to complain about it?!

i have no 3rd party firewall, and an NTL:250 modem. just rubbish area? or?
..u'd think at 2AM u'd get pretty decent speeds..

Switched off a not very recent ZA and got exactly the same results as with it on. (2.7 Mbps)
by all accounts, you have to actually uninstall ZA to get the standard stack back as za embeds itself really low down in the network stack and mearly turning it off doesnt cut it, uninstall it and try again.

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

What are people getting for upload speeds?

I've got a pretty solid 3.7-4 Mbps download, but only 120 Kbps upload (ftp to ntlworld) - I'm a bit disappointed since I was more or less getting that on 2Mb.
Connection via Samsung STB, SK11 area (Macclesfield).

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Quote, I just downloaded and installed that Kerio thing and it's even worse.

I am running Kerio and have no problems at all ? I dumped ZA ages ago due to it slowing things down.
overall speed here is now app 3.7, upload speeds are now around 46-47 as opposed to the 24-25 I had on 2mb
Running on an Ntlhome120, I just uploaded a 2.5Mb file in 49sec.

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Re tested my speed and it's still crap

Wed, 28 Jun 2006 09:19:39 GMT

1st 512K took 2468 ms = 207.5 KB/sec, approx 1710 Kbps, 1.67 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2328 ms = 219.9 KB/sec, approx 1812 Kbps, 1.77 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2016 ms = 254 KB/sec, approx 2093 Kbps, 2.04 Mbps
4th 512K took 1938 ms = 264.2 KB/sec, approx 2177 Kbps, 2.13 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1948 Kbps, 1.9 Mbps

I'll try the zone alarm unintall method and see if that makes any improvements.

Oh well, looks like I will have to look for another firewall then.
Try & find a copy of the sygate free firewall, i use that & have no problems with download speeds

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

So, I rebooted last night, and saw on my modem page I now had 4MB, was pretty chuffed. Well, not really!

Wed, 28 Jun 2006 11:45:47 GMT

1st 512K took 6782 ms = 75.5 KB/sec, approx 622 Kbps, 0.61 Mbps
2nd 512K took 3781 ms = 135.4 KB/sec, approx 1116 Kbps, 1.09 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2672 ms = 191.6 KB/sec, approx 1579 Kbps, 1.54 Mbps
4th 512K took 5718 ms = 89.5 KB/sec, approx 737 Kbps, 0.72 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1014 Kbps,
0.99 Mbps

...And that's been the best speed since around yesterday evening.
At least I get a full 40kb/sec upload though, that's important.

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

I was getting 4 meg speeds on tuesday, around 3.8 mbps speed tests, but just redid the speed test today to get this:
Wed, 28 Jun 2006 13:19:25 GMT

1st 512K took 5359 ms = 95.5 KB/sec, approx 787 Kbps, 0.77 Mbps
2nd 512K took 5016 ms = 102.1 KB/sec, approx 841 Kbps, 0.82 Mbps
3rd 512K took 4875 ms = 105 KB/sec, approx 865 Kbps, 0.84 Mbps
4th 512K took 4656 ms = 110 KB/sec, approx 906 Kbps, 0.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 850 Kbps, 0.83 Mbps
Download speeds have dropped from 450kbps to 80kbps.

Oh great NTL.

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Peil,

It would seem that part of the speed test is being read from your brower cache (hence the 1st result). Re-run the test and click on the link at the bottom to run the test from the server. This will give you your "real" speed
