I've had to change mine as well, the bromley-cache-1 server seems completely overloaded. Switched to alternative and no problems.

If this speed upgrade from 2meg to 4 meg is happening by the end of this month do they also mean the ntl120 modem? I noticed from the ntl announcement that this modem seems to be ignored. Will I get an upgrade to my service this month?

Sorry I don't really know. I just know someone that has a 120 modem, and has been upgraded from 2mb to 4mb.

Serious question for anyone that knows. Why does NTL's network seem to go tits up at the drop of a hat. While the BT infrastructure, which must have god knows how much more traffic passing along it at any given time - cope so much better with phone calls, internet traffic and the like.

Surely a dedicated cable network with far less users and therefore less traffic should cope much better with things and provide faster and more stable speeds?

I've had cable broadband since 2000, and in that time the network has gone titsup a total of three times, one of which was tonight. In all cases it's been fixed the same evening without me having to do anything.

I realise this isn't the case in all areas, however, it's not true that everyone gets a bad service. I wouldn't be with them if that was case as there are plenty of good ADSL providers out there.

Well yes, but seeing as the cable system was built from the ground up with these services in mind, surely it should be better able to cope with whatever they throw at it?

I have friends who are now quite happily using ADSL services that provide stable speeds of 10meg with 700k upload, on BT's network, which also provides god knows how much traffic in just phone calls.

I mean NTL seems unable to provide a good solid 4megs to a fair few folks on these boards.

I am no expert which is why I asked. But many freinds on ADSL usually comment with things like, "your cable disconnected again? your email is down again? they can't even give you half the 10meg speed" and so the list goes on, while they sit happily using thier internet connections without ever waking in the morning and wondering if it's still up and running.

But I digress, this is way off topic and I was asking while I was bored waiting for my 4meg connection. Was just curious. But in my eyes I think if either should be flakey, it's the old street cables carrying ADSL.

Out of curiosity (again) what would be the percentages for those who are with NTL for the internet, and those who have TV as well?

I'd have said a telephone call to CS - inviting to them to consider your request for a free, perhaps temporary, upgrade to 10mb that would suffice to compensate you for the current lack of 4mb in $insert_your_area, despite billing and publicity and so on stating [and charging] to the contrary. The "up to" get out won't even work in this case since it's self-evident from your CM log that you are only "up to" the bandwidth in the config file.

Assuming 4mb still hasn't been done by that date of course.

Given the myriad folk who appear to have been given 10mb at or below the price of 4mb "just for asking / threatening to leave", it's at least as valid a reason. Not the least because a fair %age of them appear to believe that we are all on 4mb now by confusing billing with service level.

Ring early and often though, they appear arbitrary and capricious with respect to giving these discounts. Who you speak to and how many they've done in the last hour / day / week is probably significant.
