Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

I haven't been upgraded. I would rather they didn't bother. It's fine as it is. I have horrible feelings that something will go wrong and/or it will become less reliable.

If it ain't broke - don't fix it.

If mine accidentally misses out I shall not say anything. I'm not rebooting it just in case, but I suspect it would reboot itself anyway.

Why would I need more than 2mb? This dash for speed is just ridiculous.

You make it sound like NTL are coming to get you :p

If everyone took your point of view and 'made do' with what we already had, we would still be living in caves.

Er...so you can download large files more quickly. I thought that part was obvious.

If everyone thought like that we'd all still be using 9600 baud modems. If the Internet existed at all.

LOL!... Thank you v.much, you gave me my first laugh of the day!!!!

Reminds me of the famous Bill Gates quote : "No one will need more than 637 kb of memory for a personal computer."

No it's not a free upgrade NTL have to do this to bring them inline with TELEWEST who offer 4mb for £24.99. ...

True, NTLs hand may have been forced, but its still free in the sense that it doesnt cost the consumer any more per month to go from 2meg to 4meg.

Talking Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Well Andover has been done now:
1st 512K took 1109 ms = 461.7 KB/sec, approx 3804 Kbps, 3.71 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps
4th 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3887 Kbps, 3.79 Mbps
Might have been done yesterday, but I was too busy at the birth of my 3rd son to notice.

The upgrade has come in at just the right time for sharing the photos with family

<proud dad mode on>

The dash for speed is the march of technological progress, it can't be stopped.

For general web use (browsing and the odd download) I found 2Mb more than enough. Since being upgraded yesterday to 4MB I've realised the only time I'll be taking advantage of the higher speed, is if I need to download a new app. or update. It's nice to see the numbers on the speed test though

As for the eagerness of the punters to see their upgrade arrive (I was as desperate as anyone ) for me it was little to do with speed. As a Yorkshireman I'm always happy to get summat for nowt.

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Getting a nice steady non-faltering 3.8MBit now, I've had to try a few proxies first though

1st 512K took 1093 ms = 468.4 KB/sec, approx 3860 Kbps, 3.77 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1094 ms = 468 KB/sec, approx 3856 Kbps, 3.77 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1094 ms = 468 KB/sec, approx 3856 Kbps, 3.77 Mbps
4th 512K took 1062 ms = 482.1 KB/sec, approx 3973 Kbps, 3.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3886 Kbps, 3.8 Mbps
