Ethernet to USB adaptor

Hello,

Ok so heres the problem. Currently I have my nice little 250 modem sat downstairs with a cable running up to my laptop in the bedroom, connected via ethernet obviously. We have a second (crappy old P something or other) machine running on win 98, but it only has two USB connections. If I install the NTL software on said PC and use an Ethernet to USB adaptor like this http://www.pyramid.com/Product.aspx?...3&ref_Type=CPC
would I be able to connect thru the same USB cable?

Obviously im talking one PC at at time. Its basically so my GF can connect when I take my laptop out.

It would be cheaper and easier to add a network card to the p something PC.

im guessing if I install a network card into the win98 based machine its gonna scream for the win98 disk - which I dont have. Its an old OLD machine that I rescued from a School wheelie bin!

no it will scream for drivers from the website or off the install disk it shouldnt need win 98

Mmmm...

I use 98SE a lot and if I change the network configuration at all then it resorts to the Windows disk - or at least my copy of it that's on the HDD.

I don't know for certain but I guess it'll do this even if you use a USB/Ethernet adaptor.

Why not get one of the many Windows98 'reinstall' disks that are on eBay.

Your not gonna believe this.. I took one last look around the back of said PC and noticed that the case was a little 'wonkey' - low and behold, behind a section covered up (right at the top behind the casing) was a network card!

BAAHH!!

Anyways, got NTL running now!

Question - with a router does there always have to be a 'base' unit connected to it for the other PC's connected to work?

Reason I ask is I want to be able to clear off with the laptop and still have internet access in the 2nd machine for my GF.

No.

As far as the modem is concerned, the router just looks like 1 PC connected to it. The router doesn't mind how many PCs are connected (up to a limit of, usually, about 250).

SO its a stand alone piece of kit, opperates whether theres a PC connected or not?

Also is it two RJ45 cables that I need to run from the router to PC's? Like this?
