Static IP Addresses

Hi,

Very sorry if this has been posted in the past, done a quick search but couldn't find any great reference to it on the first couple of pages. I'm lazy, sue me!!

Currently using dyndns as my router has the option in there to use and update it, but i'm finding every month and a bit, becasue I have not updated any settings, it kills my domain name, which as you can imagine is a bit of a ****er.

Do ntl offer static IP addresses to residential customers, or is it only to business customers??

Thanks in advance.

No-ip.com do the same thing however, they have a piece of software you download and run which will update your ip automatically. I have had this running for months with no problems. Look here and here

Set up a static account on dyndns.org - they never expire. It can be updated just as often as the dynamic account. The only real difference is that the propogation time through the DNS system is several hours rather than the several minutes for dynamic accounts.

The dynamic accounts are really meant for people who's IP changes very frequently, e.g. everyday.

I've used a static account for a couple of years with my NTL connection, during which time my IP has changed perhaps three or four times. It's worked fine, and I've never noticed the longer propogation time.

Re: Static IP Addresses

Mr J, do you connect through a router? If you do, you may find your router can automatically update no-ip and dyndns. I know that Linksys and d-link routers do.
