wireless internet problems

recently changed service providers to eclipse internet. The change migration was fun and games but all seems to be settled now. However noticed something that seems a bit odd.

If i check the wireless connection by clicking on the connection in the systray I get the following

surely all those errors under sent and received cant be right

the router is a netgear DG834G and the wireless adaptor is a Netgear WG311T

If needed then Sys specs are Amd Atlhon 64 3200+, 1gb memory, windows XP corp edition.

many thanks

Re: wireless internet problems

There is probably another network nearby using the same channel - try moving the wireless channel on your router, as far away as possible from the current channel (ie channel 1 or (iirc) 12.

Re: wireless internet problems

cheers for the welcome

channel was set to channel 12 originally, have now changed that to channel 1 instead. Errors are still increasing, do i need to reset the router for it to take effect.

I think there is another netgear wireless in the vicinity, if i check the networks on the wireless assistant then there are two that appear

I think maybe changing your SSID from 'netgear' might help too!

Re: wireless internet problems

ok SSID changed too, still getting these error packets too

however they are coming slower now, when i changed to channel one it was about 10,000 a second. Changed it to 2/3 and they are down to about 400 a second
cheers for the help so far guys

Re: wireless internet problems

How many networks are visible in the area?

There is some overlap in the channels so it might be a case of trying the all to find the best.

Re: wireless internet problems

two networks are showing, the other one (not mine) is on channel 11, have tried channels 1,2,3,5 so far ,will try a few others and see if they clear it up at all

---------- Post added at 20:56 ---------- Previous post was at 20:49 ----------

ok have tried all the channels now and channel 7 is doing the best, error packets only increasing by about 200 a second now. Any other things that can be changed?

Re: wireless internet problems

If your wireless units are both 54G then try selecting 54G only in the settings menu this may improve it as currently it will be set to look for every standard. Also select channel 10 or 12.

Re: wireless internet problems

ok set to G only now, have previously tried channels 10 and 12 and both were giving a higher rate of errors. so have settled on 3 now. Still getting the errors

Think I may have to find out who the other wireless belongs too and see if we can change a few settings on theres to compensate
