quick question
Quick question if I wanted to run a second pc off my connection through say a mini switch will I be able to?
Or do I need a router?

Yep, router is the one for you.
If you are on NTL make sure you get a cable router and not an ADSL one.
I reccomend Linksys routers.
Set up is very easy. Modem plugs into Router and then each of your PC's plug into the back of the router.
With the router, several PC's can share your Internet connection and files, and you dont have have other Computers switched on to use the net.

I think he means connecting his PC to BB via USB then RJ45 from one PC to the other.
