That's not really accurate, BBB.se customers can see contention and do see contention especially to international destinations. BBB is ethernet to the home as well so not really a fair comparison to cable.

Other EU countries are sending TV over ADSL2 lines, presumably for this to work they cant allow contention to poke its nose else the tv would have problems.
|
Nope not true the bandwidth on ADSL between customer and exchange is guaranteed so no danger of contention there, and the bandwidth the TV travels to the exchange over is 'nailed up' so however congested the internet traffic gets the TV will be fine. Google QoS, CoS and most relevant for ADSL CBR (Constant Bit Rate) and PVC (Permanent Virtual Circuit).

Broadband is a joke in the UK (not just ntl) and the only providers I see that are anything like what broadband should be is 2 or 3 LLU providers, even with them I would like them to use boosters so adsl works faster at longer distances.

We aren't too bad, price for not being as socialist as other places in Europe. Most here are better off than most of the USA.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
I have a serious question for anyone with the know how. Some here are "laughing" at people expecting the speeds to all have been switched exactly on the 1st June. I wasn't one of those expecting that - but when I spoke about switching speeds, I wasn't warned it hadn't been done in my area either.
But I digress. If NTL have been in a position to have offered 10megs to anyone who would have wanted it in the past however many months. Then what is the big deal about switching all those over on the 1st June?
Surely if they claim they could offer every customer "up to" 10meg, then switching those over to 4meg must be as easy as tapping something in on a keyboard? I have managed in the past to change speeds with a quick phonecall.
So honestly - why the wait? And why no upgrade online like last time? It can ony be that they know the network can't handle it? And if that's the case then why offer it in the first place.

On my Samsung STB, three lots of 'Page Up, Page Down', then hit the blue button. Of course, it might only require one PU/PD, but I couldn't get it to work any other way Damn dodgy remote...
Note that it doesn't give you much (any?) modem information.

To check the config file type 192.168.100.1 in your address bar. Logon Username is root, Password is root.Click on operation configuration link on left hand side, look for Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
If as above you re still on 2 mb.
If downstream data reads 1024000 you are on 1 mb
If downstream data reads 4096000 you are on 4 mb and so on.....

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
Right.
Rang up the Managing Director's office where a very nice lady put me through personally to CS. The Welsh bloke there wasn't too helpful, telling me I was already on 4mb. He put me through to Tech Support, where someone called James told me that the "final migration" was June 22nd. However, he said the CS "may be able to upgrade you now."
Bounced back to CS, where a very helpful Scottish chap (who asked me to "bear with" him "just a moment" about ten times) firstly didn't recognise my password, but then said I'd be on 4mb in an hours time. He also managed to extend my free digital TV, which was due to expire next Friday, for the next six months.
[Admin Edit:-Phone Number Removed-Please don't post this if you do not have permission to post it.Thanks.]

Yes ADSL is and you have to watch who you sign up with as migration my sound great but sign for the wrong one and migration can be expensive or just not possible.

here is another one who uses the service but not willing to pay the correct price bet half of NTLs customers are like that and then they complain coz there is no updating being done to the networks, or the modem coughs and misses a few pings.
It annoys me that people will lie to get a reduction in price if you are not happy enough to pay for the service at the correct price move on to ADSL and sky.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
Well, after seeing some folks calling NTL and getting somewhere I phoned them myself to see if my area had been upgraded to 4 meg yet.
The girl insisted I am on 4 meg now instead of 2meg and that it's "only up to 4meg" blah blah de blah. SO< either she didn't have the correct info. Or NTL are incapable of even supplying 4 megs to me - which explains why my 10 meg speed was diabolical. It beggars belief to be honest. And for all those defending NTL - £25 for a 2meg connection in this day and age is a bloody rip off.

thanks for that link, i looked up Wythenshawe
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ex...hp?ecode=MRWYT and it seems the No.ers are wrong though
16,900 residential premises, 505 non-residential premises
is way to low, i know there are at least 31,000 council houses in wythenshawe alone, the largest so called garden city in the EU(still), and virtually every single home has access to a BT line.
interesting that Bulldog, moved their dates up to next month too, potential for 16mbit i presume(what is their upload rate?), but what was the limit on the line again ?, 3.8 miles (6.1 km) to the airport and im somewere nearer the top end of that distance 5km or there abouts.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
just like to add here, the rollout is staggered so will only be available when a config file change is applied to a DHCP. Ringing CS because someone in another part of the country has the upgrade won't help. Whilst the systems may say 4Mb is available., you can only get it when the config file change is applied.
Always reboot your modem or STB before you ring anyone, because if you don't get the new speed then, the file change hasn't happened in your area.
