I'm wishing I'd never typed that midnight post now - was a single wink not enough?

That would be all very well if they were actually advertising thier 1mb service as 'upto 4mb' - thing is they arnt... so your point is?
The thing people need to remember is those eligable ARE getting a 4mb upgrade at somepoint in June - no-one is telling lies or bending the truth. Granted the CS teams should be dealing with enquiries a little more tactfully, but we all know what NTL's CS is like.
Like anything in progress it can take time. The upgrades are taking place, just be patient.
I dare say some of you are gonna bugger up your mains switches re-booting your modems every 15 mins at this rate.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
Ok maybe my "up to 50 meg" comment was a bit over the top. But surely something should be in place to make sure there is a minimum service that should be provided? I don't think expecting 50-60% of the advertised speed is too much to ask? but I didn't even get that. I was getting "up to 4 megs" which is the next tier down speed wise now. Isn't that when it DOES become false advertising?
It's all well and good saying lifes a bitch. But why should someone paying for a 10 meg service only get around 2 meg while someone in another city gets the full whack of 10 meg?
That's not life being a bitch. That's NTL not having a decent infrastructure in place and so provide whatever crappy speeds they can get away with - safe in the knowledge that it's advertised as "up to". Not good enough I'm afraid.
They should be wanting to provide me with 10megs and keep my £35. NOT, be happy for me to downgrade and instead get £25 off me.

I may well do that, though it's not sensible to do it on here seeing as the people on here are more likely to be the ones with definite problems
Maybe I'll set one up somewhere else and promote it 'far and wide'. Then, with some proper organisation, we might end up with some half-decent bargaining power.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
Poor NTL. I think they have made a big mistake by announcing the upgrade. Most users never see "until the end of June", they see only June, period.
Then again, a customoer support call is not 0845 anymore but costs 10 p/min, so they will make money on it :

Tell yah what ... instead of venting your grief at me call up NTL and cancel! Its quite clear that you understand the issues that NTL are having with the 10MB service, so why the hell are you still paying for it?
My quote about 'life being a bitch' was in refference to the way NTL advertise thier services, it had NOTHING to do with the 10mb service.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
hey guy's, we're all on the same team here... ease up on the pot shots will ya!
NTL are unprofessional in the way they are handling this, that's a dead cert, but there really is no need to vent on each other... chill out, relax, and let's try and work out why we are all sat at home on the internet, rebooting our modems, while everyone else is out having fun on a sunny friday evening

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
Let get one thing straight; they cant call it "up to 4mb" when not a single person ever sees above 2mb.. There is a physical limit on 2mb, end of.
Yes, existing customer cant complain, but new customer sign up to "up to" 4mb, so they expect to see above 2mb off peak (or whatever).. Personally I upgraded from 1mb to 4mb when it was advertised on their website, and expect up-to 4mb, she even told me YES, i would get 4mb, "I will upload the 4mb file to your modem, not the 2mb file"..
I agree it will come when its ready, but they really shouldnt advertise up-to 4mb when you obviously cant get it.

that's not the point - all 4meg users must be able to experience 4meg at some point during the day - even if it's 3am. as far as I can see 'upto' means when the network is stressed you get less otherwise you get close to 4meg.
---------- Post added at 21:46 ---------- Previous post was at 21:43 ----------
if not then dont advertise it with a false hope.

Erm, you might like to try reading the post I quoted, and the exchange of posts just before.
Those of us already on 2Mbs have no cause to complain about NTL if they advertise 'up to 4Mbs' on their ad becuase we're already getting what we contracted for - up to 2Mbs. However, a new customer who takes out a contract with NTL based on an ad stating 'up to 4Mbs' would have a case against NTL if - as is the case - there was no chance of them getting any more than half of what they bargained for.
'Up to' is not synonymous with 'less then'

My point exactly! At the moment NOBODY on 4mb gets over 2mb, its not physically possible with the limits in place.. They should stop adverting it until they make it available.

that is a good point - I think they have done it like this to avoid customers 'jumping the gun' on the upgrade roll-out, via an online link, which was possible during the 3-10 meg upgrade, IIRC.
- but as you say, the downside, is the effect on new customers possibly, in the short term, at least, being potentially miss-sold??? Interesting
