This is why I try to shield my kids from seeing/hearing things that they don't need to. Kids are not as able to differentiate reality from fantasy as adults. More so as they get older but as you illustrate your 10 year old struggled with the ghost even though she may seem to be mature enough 90% of the time.
I think we have to be careful here of interpreting the world the way we see it and assuming that children interpret it in the the same way. I remember an episode of 'Child Of Our Time', where young children of about age 5 were shown a clip of a nasty accident in a soap opera, and then asked about it afterwards. From what I recall very few actually picked out elements that the adults assumed they would have.
Also, is being scared always a negative thing?
I think the news is far more worrying than most pre-watershed programmes or adverts, but conversely we would likely see children viewing this as positive and educational.
Personally I see it as a bad sign about the state of society that we have to have a channel on all hours just for children. I was always told to actually get out of the house and DO things, not watch all the time. It's how I plan to raise my kids when I have them.
I think the adverts are annoying... so my little lad only watches CBeebies because he gets impatient waiting for his cartoons to come back on.
As for scary/inappropriate adverts, i haven't seen that many of them tbh, but there are always loads on for junk food and i thought there was a bit outcry about this and was made to be stopped?
