VPN problems

I am having problems establishing a VPN connection using 2 different methods.
here is the setup.
VPN Host is a XP pro machine wired directly to a cable modem via USB with no firewall running.
I set the IP range on the VPN to use 192.168.40.1 to 192.168.40.100

The machine i am trying to connect from is also XP pro and both host and client are using the same ISP (Blueyonder)
are in the same area, and have very similar modem IP's
i have tried connecting both from behind a router and a direct connection to my cable modem.
here is whats happening,
when i am plugged directly to the cable modem, (no firewall):--
I can connect straight to the vpn with no problems at all
i can ping the vpn server at 192.168.40.1
i can ping the hosts public IP
i can ping the vpn server hostname (returns the public IP)
the vpn connection stays stable for many hours/days
however with this setup i cannot see the host pc no matter what! (by searching for hostname via windows search)

when i am plugged via my router with PC set in DMZ:--
I can connect straight to the vpn with no problems at all
i can ping the vpn server at 192.168.40.1
i can ping the hosts public IP
i can ping the vpn server hostname (returns 192.168.40.1)
the vpn pc is found via search and the shares are perfectly accessible by this method and also mapping network drives, (near enough as quick as reading as local drive)

The VPN connection drops between 2mins 27 and 2mins 35!!
i am using Administrator accounts on both pc's
any ideas?
thanks in advance
