Will ntl ever keep up with Sky's service?

They'll have to, they'll have to keep the benefits of their HFC network outweighing Sky and ADSL2+. As Sky enter the broadband sector, we know that Sky's marketing trumps ntl's so ntl will have to offer a better product - faster speeds then can be offered over the copper loop architecture and capping to a minimum / non existing.

Either way, the competition is good for us consumers

All the latest talk from the new merged ntl/telewst company says they will take on BT and Sky and Win!.

Whatever that means we will just have to see. But two things they need to consider.

1) BT now have the opportunity to charge customers what they like, that could mean cheaper phone calls and line rental.

2) To beat Sky, you have to offer something far better than Sky +. Content may be one thing, possibly some fottie rights may help, I don't know.

Whatever they plan, it has to be a good win to keep existing customers and attract a raft of new ones.

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

Hey guys, I've attached my Sky by Broadband screenshot below, I have no idea whether NTL will challenge Sky or not, their are a few problems with this service, firstly the speeds at which you ''download a movie'', this is the whole point of the project, having the ability to download a movie and watch it at will using the service.

I think SKY has under-estimated its potential, by this I mean SKY has not taken much consideration as to how many people have broadband these days and how popular this service may become.

This is the basic problem, the download speeds do not touch 100kbp/s an average movie like the i, robot movie you can see in the download is around 724mb or so, you'd expect much faster download speeds coming from a wealthy company.

I don't see this as a problem personally as I be gaming most of the time, I can afford to wait several hours whilst it downloads silently in the background.

But for the majority of Internet Users, this can be a pain, I understand them, however as this is a relatively new service, you can expect much more from Sky, please note I've edited the picture, censoring my username for the simple reason of privacy, thank you all for reading this post

it seems if you are a sky customer an have ANY broadband connection you can download at no extra cost movies straight to you home computer.
when (if ever) will ntl be offering this or a similar service to its customers instead of the pathetic rubbish thats currently on broadband plus?
Ntl really need to wake up an provide what people want instead of messing people around with a unstable service that costs as much if not more than all the other companys.
Well seen as BB+ is free from NTL now, I don't see how there is anything wrong with all the services that are offered on it.

Agreed , bb+ is not bad given it is now free, but ive had it since it was released an tho its better than nothing there is actually very little on it that im interested in, take heavy metal music or death metal, european rock, theres none on it at all, save for the pop music stuff which aint my thing. Only heavy band to speak of on bb+ is sepultra an those video feeds dont work lol.

on a slightly different note, being able to download movies to a home computer is a major step in the fight against piracy, i would much rather be able to do this than well we all know whats out there an how to get it but its not right is it. hehe.

I can only hope what one other user said is correct that the companys will help push each other to bring these services out an improve things for all in general.

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

I have mixed feelings about sky's download service.

It isnt strictly free but rather inclusive with their premium channels.

It isnt a download service as such but more like a sharing service, and to many the app running in the background wont be noticed other then their internet slowing down, sky could get in trouble for this in future in a similiar way to how sony got in trouble with their cd rootkit.

ntl could deliver 22meg in many areas. The problem is that they seem stuck in the idea that they must deliver the same service to everyone. BT don't seem to suffer this handicap - they will only deliver 22meg to a small handful, close to the exchange, and if the exchange has the equipment.

Thanks for the screenshot Unreal. That's a pretty useless interface, no speed statistics at all (unless they're hidden in a tool tip or something) and from your experiences you could well download the movie illegally much quicker and keep the movie forever. What an incentive to do the right thing!

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

I tried the Sky By Broadband service and found it no problem to download four or five films overnight. Didn't enter into the spirit of it though as I prevented others from sharing via my system. Never watched any of the films downloaded though before they were deleted from my system after the 4 week period. Couldn't really see the point of downloading for watching at home. There is enough content which I record via Sky+ to keep me happy which I can watch on our large screen TV.

SBB seems more suited to those who are away from home regularly and who download movies to watch on their laptop in their hotel room or wherever.
