connection issues

hi everyone i have just recently installed a new ethernet adapter which is a hp 1207d-tx pci fast ethernet adapter driver. at first the device was working a dream but i formatted my computer as i had some spyware on and coul not remove it. after re installing windows xp i chose automatic settings. my intrenet works for afew minutes, but the connection is not constant. i have also cheaked that the power management option is also swicthed off but this does not solve my problem.
please please could someone help me with this matter. many thanks in advance.

do you connect using a cable modem or set top box, bobby?
