and i also find (so far) BY to be not very reliable at all, in the few weeks ive been on with them, i have had 3 times where i cant connect, cable light just blinking, and a phone call to them just gets me "there is an outage in the area, and you will be back on asap" which the 3rd time (yesterday in fact) took me untill 7am this morning to connect again alltho, from what i read on forums, cable is alot more relible than DSL, all i say to that is, i feel so so sorry for people on DSL
I've had cable problems also where my modem keeps flashing the lights to indicate that it's offline, you can't even turn your modem off for some reason as well ,and I got the same response when I phoned them, just like you say " there are people working in the area", it's happened about 3 times so far but yes, stay clear from DSL I still do not regret in anyway turning to BY and when I see these other ISPs I just think how lucky I am.

if you have the webstar DPX100 the only way to turn off or restart is to pull plug and put back in, or goto address http://192.168.100.1/gscan.htm and restart your modem from there..

Unhappy Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I have joined this forum in hoping to find out what is happening with my BY internet speed. I have moved to Birmingham area and my internet speed has been very slow so far. It is not so bad as I get 500kbps average during the morning and day, but during the peak evening time the speed is so slow that I can't use the internet.

I have contacted BY, and never mind the 4mb upgrad that is supposed to be finished, I don't even get a dial up speed during the evening time. This is very bad since I come home from work and that is the time I want to use the internet! So basically I am paying 25 pounds for nothing! BY told me at the end that it is too many modems are trying to connnect at the same time. (why just can't tell me that they have over sold the bandwidth?) Now I can't play CS anymore. None at BY can tell me when will the problem will be sorted, and they always tell me that there is something wrong with the network. (Doh.. I can see that!!!)

I just want to say to the people here that , never mind the complaining about
the speed being 500kbps slow... it is true that if you have 2mb or 4mb line you should get a better connection, but there are lots of people like myself who can't even open up a google.com in less than 3 mins.

I have sent couple of emails to BY, but no replies so far.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I can well understand your frustration, but its never been anything else with Blueyonder, the main problem is oversubscription, but a lot of it depends on the computer populated residencies where you live, they like you all want to be online at the same time and the result is chaos,it starts when the schools close and ends about midnight,I cant see it ever being any different, when I started with them about 6 years ago and was on dial up it used to take anything up to an hour to even get a connection, you had to wait until others logged off,you can blame the chat rooms a lot .....it is better if you have the 1Mg broadband or higher of course but not much....even the 10Mg users have problems as can be seen from these forums ....This as I have come to realise is the way it is unfortunately,we can only hope and pray it will get better ..

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I did everything that I can to make a complaints to the Telewest, and they finally got back to me. They actually told me that the upgrade is DONE. And it was done very some time ago...

I have never EVER experienced any speed increase for 4mb connection. The fastest speed I experienced is 100kbs download speed on 5:00 am. If I was supposed to get the 4mb download speed during non-peak time, I think I was supposed to get faster download speed.

anyway, they told me that they are working on the upgrades , because they did not expect the traffic to increase so much... dho... and they can't actually do nothing about the problem I was experiencing until the end of March.

Instead, they offered me a refund until end of March for my internet connection. While this does not sort out my problem of not being able to use the internet for god knows how long, I won't be paying for such a **** service.

I just wish I could leave them and be with some other company.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

well, no internet until end of March does scares me to hell but I guess its time to look after my garden then

YES.. i heard that AOL is even worse. I was actually very happy with most of the ISPs here in the UK after considering that I came from South Africa.

sorry for the non-title related story but here is their situation

Poor people in SA is still getting LAMEST internet service from Telkom.

http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/produ..._how_much.html

They are paying separate service to the LINE RENTAL AND ISP SERVICE + you have to buy Modem. to setup the service it costs like 150 pounds ++ and 100 pounds ++ every month for 192kbps ADSL service with 3GB SHAPED cap.

I am including my diagnostic data as requested by you. I have phoned the
help line again last night and they asked me to change my uploading
stream channel. It did help a bit, but it is still slow and it is only a
temporary solution. I do not believe changine up stream channel is not
going to solve the problem for good. The technical help line TOLD ME
that it is problem of overloading network in our area. So to fix this
problem YOU have to do something. Please do not blame/forward the
problem to me. I have verified this so many times with the technical
help line.

Last night was terrible and here are the details of the data requested.

Not sure if this covers you as it's "Midlands" in the generic sense:

http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/status/s...?ticket=311394

Been outstanding now over a week about "slow connection speeds" and been updated a couple of times - no clue as to the cause or the expected "fix" time tho.

For a while now I've had regular disconnections from servers I'm connected to, and my MSN has gone mad with reconnecting every 20-30mins Would be nice if they actually gave an idea of when they think the problems would be resolved on the status page as well

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Well now a few with slow speeds yet again..

looks like foneing BY again, this time ask who your talking to as it apears we have a contract firm also taking calls, I didnt know till I read it here...
and some of those guys have nooo idea what they are on about...

its easy for By to blame network etc ect.. when it isnt...

only 1 in 5 of the jobs Ive been out to have been real network issues, faulty modems, bad connections, high upstreams caused by loose fittings, ingress..

but untill a tec looks checks, makes sure its none of the above, then blame the network...

we get to talk to second line, the guys mostly know their jobs...will not blame spyware etc, just to get rid of you...and will help...

again, if I get there and it works, my code would be nff...so if it falls over at 5 pm book a tec for 4-7.... we can ask for the account to be monitored..
this will see when it happens, whats happening....how long the downtime is,
and can check to see if its happening to others in the same area...

its not much good coming here and saying its sucks, some tecs do know what they are doing..

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Worth mentioning though that you're only talking about the HFC / RF plant, whereas people complaining about the network are more often than not complaining about congestion on the network which isn't really down to the RF network so much as what's on the other end. The problems with performance in peak times are almost certainly congestion or CMTS issues.

PS I'm not saying all techs suck I'll just stick with saying you do

Last night (tues 17th) there was a sudden drop in my speed, and it has remained consistently low since then. Now my speed (going by the same speed test which gave the prev figures) is averaging 350Kbps, but sometimes rising to 500kbps if i'm really lucky. Also, the orange 'activity' light on my sb5100 modem is blinking slightly intermittently, instead of blinking steadily as before.
Am I right in saying you'll NEVER reach speeds of 1700k/sec or 2500k/sec as quoted on the complete 4mbit service nevermind the elite 10mbit service, that will probably max out around 1300k/sec.

With the complete 4mbit service you'll max around 490k/sec so I wouldn't be that worried with your speeds currently.

Cool Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Have you tried rebooting the modem?
I usually find that the pc/activity light is not a great indicator of what the problem is, but rebooting the modem usually sorts that out, so if they are connected.......?
