Router help

Received me D541 D Link Router on Friday, since then more than not when I click on a link, on any page it goes to page cannot be displayed and I have to refresh the page and try again. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening??

What signal strength are you getting from the router?

You've restarted your computer? I know it sounds a dumb one, but I get this on my laptop if I transfer it from one location to another without restarting it. I think it gets confused what IP it has leased from the router.

Start > Run > Command
then
ipconfig /release
then
ipconfig / renew
then
exit

might clear it up - this is what works for me instead of a restart.

I was getting very good and excellent strnegth, I checked that just incase.

The problem i have now is I enabled WEP and its encrypted my router I cant connect without a network key, I dont know the password, anyway round this?

It could be that mate, because sometimes I travel from room to room still connected, can that cause problems?

It could be that mate, because sometimes I travel from room to room still connected, can that cause problems?

You should have typed the password in when you enabled WEP - you should be able to connect tothe router with a wire and then disable this or change the password.
Moving from room to room will have no effect, moving from network to network is the problem (especially when both have the same name).

I enabled it and the only password I made was one Ive tried typing in but says its incorrect. seen loads of 0's typed in but they were there as default.

Is that a cat 5 ethernet cable i use, how do i conenct it and where to?

Any of the 4 ports together on the back of the router and to the port on your laptop (if it has built in wireless I imagine it will have built in ether).

192.168.1.1 and your user id and password to log in.

If that does not do it then pressing the reset button until the router restarts will also fix this (and drop any other settings you may have chosen).

I managed to encrypt my router by enabling WEP. I have been advised to use a Cat 5 cable to connect dirctly to my router but I cant see how this is possble.

Connect my laptop to router using ethernet connection, leaves the connction from modem to router out does it not?

I press the reset hole but still only the wep enaled connection is availabl to choose from, and that ip address is saying page cannot be displayed.

I tried connectiong a ethernet connection laptop to router and router to modem but same thing, no other connection to choose from :s

On the back of the router there should be one ethernet (RJ45) socket marked 'WAN' or 'INTERNET' or something similar _ unfortunately I'm not familiar with the model in question. This is where you plug the cable from the modem in. There should also be a number (usually four) of other RJ45 sockets labeled 'LAN' (or similar). These are where you would connect a PC or laptop which doesn't have wireless.Connect one of these ports to your laptop's ethernet socket via an ethernet cable. Turn onn the router, wait a few seconds and then turn onm the laptop. You need to make sure that the laptop's ethernet connection is set to get an IP via DHCP. Pressing the reset button on the router should have set all the setting back to the factory defaults so it should now have an IP address of 192.168.1.1Your laptop should have acquired an IP address of something like 192.168.1.2, so open a web browser and point it at 192.168.1.1 and you should see the built in configuration web page. You will need to log in (usually this is admin with no password - but you'll need to check the manual) and then set up all the settings again from scratch.
