Well it is true you will not get 10 mbit through usb 1.But before you buy a router why don`t you swap the ethernet to your pc and see what you get.

Get a router. It's the best way to link in as you get multiple connections and most routers have firewalls built in.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
If you've been reading this topic for a while then you've probably seen my other posts. Here's an update on my situation.
I've only been getting between 1-3Mb for weeks now, apart from one 24 hour period where it was 6-7Mb (shame it didn't last). I got board trying to get through to custoerm services so I thought I'd give Tech Support a call for a laugh. After getting past the "have you tried rebooting your pc" and router question (I don't have one). The chap in India said that it's a problem between my STB and PC bacause the STB is definately receiving at 5Mb, the signal must be losing power somewhere. After a number of other test he said he would chaneg my IP address and put me on another sever (L1 whatever that means). If that didn't work then he'd arrange for the STB to be replaced becuase it must be faulty.
So, PC turned off and plug pulled out the STB, then waited the half hour he said. I then rebooted everything, disabled then enabled the LAN and then expected to have to re-register my PC on the NTL netwoek like the chap said. However, no re-regestering was needed and my IP address didn't change. So, called tech support again and explained this to a lady. She went though a couple of things then asked me to hold on a moment.
Whilst I was waiting I decided to try a couple of speed test quickly (the one on this board and the one at irishisptest.com). To my suprise I'm now getting speeds of 5-7Mb quite consistently. I advised this to the lady and she said it's not possible on a Samsung STB.
After doing the two test again half a dozen times I still got the same results. She said this was fantastic speeds for a STB at which point I said I'll leave things alone and see how it goes.
So, biting your tongue when speaking to Tech Support can actually help if you give them a chance. As for my speeds, I've experienced the improvement once before and it didn't last!!!

1st 512K took 593 ms = 863.4 KB/sec, approx 6562 Kbps, 6.4 Mbps
2nd 512K took 531 ms = 964.2 KB/sec, approx 7328 Kbps, 7.2 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2108 ms = 242.9 KB/sec, approx 1846 Kbps, 1.8 Mbps
4th 512K took 641 ms = 798.8 KB/sec, approx 6071 Kbps, 5.9 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 5452 Kbps, 5.33 Mbps
Can anyone explain to me why there's always one ot two slow results out of the 4?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
This is about as good as I've been getting for the last 2 days in the stoke-on-trent area:
Tue, 24 Jan 2006 22:21:20 UTC
1st 512K took 4391 ms = 116.6 KB/sec, approx 961 Kbps, 0.94 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2703 ms = 189.4 KB/sec, approx 1561 Kbps, 1.52 Mbps
3rd 512K took 3515 ms = 145.7 KB/sec, approx 1201 Kbps, 1.17 Mbps
4th 512K took 2969 ms = 172.4 KB/sec, approx 1421 Kbps, 1.39 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 1286 Kbps, 1.25 Mbps
£37.99 per month for this load of rubbish!!!!!!! <fuming>
I'm cancelling first thing in the morning. NTL have had their last chance as far as I'm concerned.

2 days and you're giving up!!!! Have you actually phoned TS??? If you have, what have they tried????
As for me, my speed is still as it's supposed to be, I think. 4-5Mb if tested here at Cable Forums and 6-8Mb if I use irishisptest.com. when I was having a problem both of them gave just about the same results. Anyone know the difference between the these two test and why they might vary so much.
Also, does anyone know of where I can download a 30Mb+ file from that's on a site that has the ability to upload at 10Mb?? I've tried a few sites and I only download at 2-2.5Mb, which is contrary to the speed test results I get. However, I don't know whether this is the max speed the site will do.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
On USB versus Ethernet, I believe most NTL cable modems only support USB 1.1, which has a 12 megabit/s limit. USB is inherently half-duplex and the figure does not include overheads for packetisation etc, etc both at USB and TCP/IP level. That is why it is a bottleneck and unlikely to top 4-5 Mbit/s throughput.

Try the speed test below, select custom then the 14 meg file, you can run it 3 times. You should get what i pasted below:
http://www.kbps.co.uk/index.php?opti...apper&Itemid=8
File size transferred : 14.75 MB (15468724 bytes)
Total time taken : 12.64 seconds (12640 milliseconds)
Throughput : 1223.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 1.22 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 9784.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 9.78 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
I've had steady speeds of just over 10mbit but it all depends on the other end. Will be switching back to 2mb though dont think paying £10 extra for a cap is worth it

Thanks for that fire. Here are the results i get, not pleasant reading unfortunately:
File size transferred : 14.75 MB (15468724 bytes)
Total time taken : 38.94 seconds (38937 milliseconds)
Throughput : 397.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.4 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 3176.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 3.18 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]
Well, the situation I have now is that two sites (here and kbps.co.uk) that say I'm running at 3Mb (approx) and two sites (irishisptest.com and adlsguide) that say I'm runnning at 5Mb (approx). Whichever is right, unless ntl install a SACM for free, I'm going to downgrade to 2Mb. However, having a problem in finding the right people to speak to at ntl at present.
