The judge said it was probably better for society if he was not sent to jail.

Who cares what his reasons were - theft is theft. And apparently it's not the 1st time his had his hand in the till, so why on earth shouldn't he now be sharing a cell with a 6-foot tall, hairy bloke called Bubba?!?

And to top it all off he was a member of the Freemasons, this organisation needs closing down now, it harbours criminals with their closed door policy and clandestine meetings.

Who's betting the judge was a member of the Freemason lodge too? Aren't these places frequented by solicitors, coppers, judges and big business men?

Yeah, and being as its the world's largest philantropic organisation we can kiss goodbye to the billions raised worldwide for some of the most deserving (yet overlooked) charities.
And no, I am not a mason.
The sentence isn't that light. People have got suspended sentences for manslaughter in the past.
Considering:
1. He pleaded guilty
2. Its his first offence
3. His previous good character
4. The person he stole from was his friend, and although it doesn't say, he could well have spoken in defence of the thief.
5. Most of the money went back into the masons, and so to charity. The rest helped out a friend with his mortgage.
It hardly makes him Hitler. He was lucky to have his sentence suspended, but its not a major miscarriage of justice.

True, but it seems being, or having been, a copper is almost guaranteed to ensure you don't do time inside.
In this case he also left the force because of 'impropriety' - hardly what I would call a pillar of society.

1. OK
2. No

The prosecution said Butcher, who became club secretary in 1999, had been forced to resign from the force in 2002 over allegations of dishonesty and impropriety, unrelated to the golf club theft.

3. See 2.
4. Thieving from a friend is OK ???????????
5. No .. it went to pay his £16000 loan and a mortgage for a friend. !!!
This last bit is suspicious .. why is he paying a mortgage for a close friends house ???

.......as well as paying the mortgage on a house of a close friend.

Hang the bu**er !!!! Another bent copper
He should have the book thrown at him just as it would have been at you or I, even more since he was supposed to be a person of trustworthiness and status.

Re: He's an ex cop, he's a mason, so.....
At the end of the day the masons pretty much own britain, they are unlikely to throw a lodge master who was also a retired cheif inspector into the nick. and lets face it even in solitary confinement you could hardly call it a safe place for him to be. Theres only one target higher in prisons than paedophiles and thats a copper, a masonic copper would just be the icing on the cake for other inmates aswell.
Thats human socielty pretty much all over the world "its not what you know, its who you know & what you know about who you know"

Maybe not 'guilty' per se, but enough for him to be 'forced to resign'. Possibly another example of masonic favours, rather than facing investigations that could lead to guilt.

So, leaving insinuation and speculation to one side, in the eyes of the law (which is all that is relevant when sentencing), he was of previous good character and had no previous convictions.
Sounds like a suspended sentence was about right to me.

As Chris said, allegations doesn't mean you are proven guilty.

No, but if your friend defends you, then the sentencing will reflect that.

In addition to that, it also went to fund being a lodge master which is expensive. It is basically donations, donations donations. Masons always have fundraisers and causes, and lodge masters have to donate the most.

Yes, he helped pay his friend's mortgage, so let's hang him

If all things were equal, including age, family status, except for job (but you'd still have to have disguinshed employment service in some area), then you probably would get a similar punishment.

Oh Yes they'll be quing up to shove his face in the pillow.
Freemasons I hate them with a passion. I know one freemason who got off with arson, he was seen by 4 people running away from a fire he'd started, the coppers went to interview him and a few days later they closed the case. He was bang to rights but because he was a member of the masonic lodge magically the case got closed by the police.

No no no the masonic lodge is full of crooked coppers, judges, solicitors and businessmen who are only associated with the freemasons for their own benefit.
