STB to Cable Modem question

On Saturday NTL are coming out to take away two set top boxes and install a cable modem, as I'm currently on the 3MB connection and its being upgraded to 10MB.

What I'd like to know is, is it as simple as swapping out the set top box in my room which currently provides the internet and changing it to a cable modem, or will they need to renew cabling for the modem?

The cable comes from the front of the house, and upstairs and then through the wall into this room, so it'd be a nightmare if they had to re-cable it just for the modem.

Also, the way I have it set up now, STB > 4 port router > 3 PC's

Will I be able to do the same with the cable modem, as I've heard they are USB only? I don't fancy having one PC on all the time just so it can share the connection.

If anyone can let me know, thanks!

Re: STB to Cable Modem question

They will most likely split the NTL coax and connect the modem. You will still need an STB for your TV. The cable modem has ethernet and usb so you wont have a problem there.

I cant see why NTL wont simply install the modem next to the STB.

Re: STB to Cable Modem question

If NTL install the modem next to the STB it sometimes looses signal, but i doubt its that.It will be really easy to install they shouldnt need to renew the cabling at all!,If you have any concerns just ask the engineer when he comes. All ntl engineers are very polite and helpfull. As long as your STB isnt chipped u should get a long fine. Are you still wanting to keep your STB connected to your TV? The most theyll do is just feed of your main cable, which takes bowt 2 seconds.LOL

Re: STB to Cable Modem question

Cheers for the replies.

Glad to know new cabling won't be needed!

Wasn't aware the cable modem had ethernet as well, that's ace!

I'm getting rid of the STB's as I hardly ever watch telly, so gonna get a freeview box instead and save some money as I'm paying out £110+ a month currently for NTL.

Re: STB to Cable Modem question

Just one point....

STB's usualy have X-over ethernet cables, You may want to make sure your router supports using X-over cables, If not you may have to chnage the cable or get a convertor.

Cant see that you will have a problem as most router's support both cable types
