Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Well, I don't know if its because everyone is at home on the net for Xmas, but since Xmas, my 'upto 5Mb' Sammy has been decidely sub 3Mb in Pompey on the new config file ;

Wed, 28 Dec 2005 15:15:50 UTC

1st 512K took 2073 ms = 247 KB/sec, approx 2035 Kbps, 1.99 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1963 ms = 260.8 KB/sec, approx 2149 Kbps, 2.1 Mbps
3rd 512K took 3295 ms = 155.4 KB/sec, approx 1280 Kbps, 1.25 Mbps
4th 512K took 1592 ms = 321.6 KB/sec, approx 2650 Kbps, 2.59 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2029 Kbps, 1.98 Mbps

It was hitting the 5Mb mark before Xmas

What a good idea guys! Took the Linksys out of line - direct ethernet into the PC et voila!!

- ran three different speed tests and got between 4.8 and 7Mbps

So, just ordered a Linksys WRT54GS-UK for £49 off Amazon. Will add wireless too so I can use the laptop away from the desk here

I guess the old BEFSR41 v2 is heading for the "Internet home for old routers" i.e. Ebay...

Thanks for your help guys..

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I am getting similarly erratic speeds with my Linksys WRT54GX (only a couple of months old) via wireless, nowhere near 5mb and sometimes more like 1.5mb.

Will an upgrade to a standalone cable modem cure this ?

Xmas period will be worst performance you could pretty much consider it peak time all day during this holiday period, not to mention less maintenance will be done as well.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

lets be honest now if there touting the lines as 10mg then 10mg they should be not UPTO 10mg thats clearly misleading joe public into thinkin there gonna get a 10mg line and to be honest most people on here i have seen dont get 10mg BW for sure a lot are getting sub 3mg what they used to have so crappy ntl need to get there finger outta there backsides and deliver the correct speeds,on top of that they also need to sort out CS like giving them the correct information so they at least can seem like they understand and to answer the question of its xmas it will be busy and you wont get the speed...easy answer there DONT tout those damm speeds if the network cant deliver them ffs

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Speeds have by all operators always, ALWAYS been touted as 'up to' speeds, there's no guarantee there of 10Mbit.

Unless an ISP owns the entire internet they cannot guarantee speeds to anyone. Even leased lines costing a few hundred quid a month only guarantee bandwidth inside the service provider's own network.

If you want 'guaranteed' 10Mbit best dip hand a lot lot deeper into pocket than £35/month

Bulldog, UKOnline, Be, Telewest, all 'up to' speeds.

Yes, but people are saying they are getting the full speed when they connect directly to their STB's, which suggests that it's not an issue of when they're doing it.

eh?

If you are talking about the router speed issue's ntl cant be blamed for user's using their own routing hardware that is incapable of the speeds.

I am just trying to get a simple answer to a simple question but instead I keep being blamed for a problem other people are having as well!

All I want to know is will a switch to a standalone cable modem solve this issue or is it an issue people are seeing with SACMs as well ?

If switching solves the problem, I will wait until it is possible to be switched. If it does not, I will have to consider switching to another provider.

My router is perfectly capable of handling the 3mb service I was on before the "upgrade". I do not want an "upto 5mb" service that only actually goes up to 1.5mb, I want, minimally a 3mb service.

---------- Post added at 23:02 ---------- Previous post was at 22:50 ----------

Speeds when connected directly:

1st 512K took 4737 ms = 108.1 KB/sec, approx 891 Kbps, 0.87 Mbps
2nd 512K took 3194 ms = 160.3 KB/sec, approx 1321 Kbps, 1.29 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2825 ms = 181.2 KB/sec, approx 1493 Kbps, 1.46 Mbps
4th 512K took 4586 ms = 111.6 KB/sec, approx 920 Kbps, 0.9 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1156 Kbps, 1.13 Mbps

When directly connected, XP reports a 10mb connection, not 100mb which would seem to be the problem.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Right so you are on the 10meg service with a STB and the above speedtest is what you just connected directly?

The scores are low but a sacm will not improve it if the problem is local congestion, the best way to find out if it is congestion is repeat it in 3 or 4 hours around 2 or 3am and see if their is a marked improvement. If the speeds rise to around 5meg then it will be a case then you can get a sacm to take the max to 10meg, if they stay low I would consider ringing in to report a fault and get an engineer callout, this may also get you a sacm free of charge if the engineer feels it will help.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Using http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp I get

Downstream3709 Kbps (463.6 KB/sec)4005 Kbps (inc. overheads)Upstream485 Kbps (60.6 KB/sec)523 Kbps (inc. overheads)

I updated from 2mb to 10mb on xmas day. Little present to myself. Not to happy though. Very unstable. Highest dl spped I've hit is 700kbs. Ambit 120, USB connected. Glasgow.

Will ethernet cable help in any way?
