Set up Connection Problems PC to Wireless Router

Hi after days looking managed to buy a belkin wireless cable router F5D7231UK4 (last one available)for my cable telewest blueyonder BB.

Problem - current webstar cable modem connects to PC via USB. There is a free ethernet port on modem which I see will connect to new belkin router.

I still need to make intital connection to PC via ethernet are there ways around this. Can I set up Belkin router on another PC or does it still need to go via modem.

I already have a second PC wirelessy enabled via USB and a laptop with internal wireless card.

I just need help setting up main PC as you need a wired connection to start with. I was thinking of keeping existing wired USB/modem in place after as I only need the second PC and laptop wireless.

I have read about wireless PCi card or ethernet adapter but my modem only has the one ethernet port and even with a ethernet adapter in PC I cant connect it to router.

Sorry but I want to get parts needed before Christmas hols.

Thanks

Re: Set up Connection Problems PC to Wireless Router

Debbie,

Firstly, if I read your post correctly you want to have both the USB PC and Ethernet router connected to the modem. I'm afraid you can only have one or the other - in this case the router.

In terms of setting it up, yes you need a computer with an ethernet port attached to the router. If the Laptop doesn't have one, you can get a PCI ethernet card for the main PC for about £10/15. Don't forget you will also need an rj45 LAN cable between the PC & router!

If the main PC is next to the router you can use the ethernet card permanently, otherwise you can use a PCI wireless card.

To summarise -

1. You need a wired network connection between a PC and router to set it up.
2. You can only have the router plugged into the modem.
3. The main will need a connection to the router, either wired or wireless.

HTH
