Cable Modem and usb
well i'm not sure if it is with the modem but anyway. for various reasons i have to connect via usb (i have another computer connected via ethernet using ics, and the last few days i've been getting blue screen errors blamed on 'usbport.sys'
i assumed it was a driver problem with a usb wireless dongle i had plugged in, so i got rid of that and the blue screens stopped, but instead the modem would keep disconnectiong and reconnecting - as if the pc thought the usb lead had been unplugged. i'd then lose the connection as windows even viewer showed that it was trying to get a new ip for the modem as the ip was already taken
I just switched it over to another usb socket and, touch wood, it seems ok now, but is this problem known? could it be a problem with the usb drivers or something as simple as a damaged usb socket? or is the modem dying?
I'm in Glasgow on 2mb and using the ambit cable modem (i think the 100 one)

Buy a router and connect all PCs to it and the modem.
this will be the best method.

When you do make sure it can handle 10Mb.
If you are an NTL customer make sure that you get the correct router, some have ASDL which is NOT NTL compatible

yeah i checked the reccomendation list elsewhere in this forum. the Linksys WRT54G sounds good to me. but this is going off topic rapidly!

hi again, i got another crash today. it's curious. sometimes the modem seems to disconnect much like in the big topic above about people having random disconnects, other times i get a blue screen talking about usbport.sys.
there's obviously something to do with the usb drivers. i suspect it's maybe both... some kind of heavy load is making the modem reboot which is upsetting the usb?
would potentially installing new usb drivers affect anything? i don't undertsand why it's started now.

How many other usb devices do you have directly connected to your PC?

I was forced into using Ethernet after a lightning strike fried the USB port on the modem, best thing that ever happened, Ethernet all the way

none! it's weird. i figure if it was a dodgy driver it would happen more predicatbly, and wouldn't have just started happening. a wild theory made me think it's some dodgy connection on the modem or even the tv stb as it seemed to have something to do with wires on that being moved. and yeah it's a pain in the ass. gonna have to put with it until i get the router i guess
i see it's disconnected at least once since i was last on. didn't crash though.

got a spare pci slot?
as you can pickup an ethernet card for under £5 which would probably be a better solution than using usb anyway.
nothing to stop you having more than one network card in the pc

Strip the USB controllers and root hubs off in Device Manager and reinstall. Preferably get the latest drivers from your mainboard mfr... if the PC was "off the shelf" they may be difficult to find. What make / model?
By this I mean...
All of the items "USB Root Hub" or "USB controller", right click, select uninstall. Then reboot the PC.

Could it be the USB connection on the modem?,I agree just get an ethernet card.I have had loads of problems using USB.
