Lost & Delayed Mail

Hi my name is Sam,

Can someone please advise me as to what could cause emails to get lost or delayed, i mean 6 days sometimes.

Ntl after telling me it was the person sending the email that had the problem have now said that it is something to do with my IP address possibly being black listed and that my lease on ip address was due to expire and that it would change so this would rectify the problem, well the lease has changed but still have the same ip address.

problem now going on for 3 weeks
i have made min of 6 calls to ntl
ntl broadband customer
use xp
microsoft outlook

problem has occured with two seperate senders now but mainly one who is with virgin

i work from home and cannot earn money if i dont recieve my mail or receive it to late.............so could somebody please help me...................xxx

Re: Lost & Delayed Mail

Ntl's email service (when it is working) has been pathetic for all the years I have had the service.

I use Gmail from it's web interface now and have enjoyed a much better service with no appreciable downtime so far at all.

I have experienced the odd couple of bounces due to Sorbs periodically blacklisting gmail. Sorbs seem to blacklist everybody at some time or other.
Sorbs seems to create more problems than it solves and is a major PITA.

Re: Lost & Delayed Mail

to Cable Fourm

Everyone thinks of email as being instant communication, but realistically it was not intended to be, and the larger the file size the longer it can take to get there. That's not to say there isn't some sort of problem wiht your account.

It is perhaps worth trying an alternate email provider, but even those can have their issues, not that long ago there were loads of therads on this board about hotmail.

Having said that, you are complaining that failure to get email means you can't earn money. Presumably you are on a residential service, so your buisiness use doesn't really leave you with grounds for much more than a whinge.

Re: Lost & Delayed Mail

Your IP address has absolutely no bearing on receiving email.
Is all your email delayed or only mail from particukar sources e.g. hotmail?

Re: Lost & Delayed Mail

Sammy, spend a tenner on a domain name, then you can route the mail to whoever you please and no one will know the difference. They'll just keep mailing Sammy 'at' your-domain.co.uk. this way you'll only need to change the address this once and thats it.

Also you could select a domain name that's relevent to you i.e. Sammy 'at' my-business.co.uk which will probably look better than a standard ISP email.

They are wrong to assume that. The actual error message and headers will show where the problem actually is.

I've had similar problems from a Virgin net address. Email can take anything from 24 hours to 3 days to arrive! I thought it was from just one particular address but I have since experienced it from another Virgin net customer. My friend has reported it to Virgin net. She has no problems sending to other ISP's and I don't experience it from anyone else (except maybe government systems, but that is only to be expected.)

Re: Lost & Delayed Mail

Some of Virgin's mail severs (run by Critical Path) are (or were, haven't checked) stuck on SORBS. It is a known problem and they are working to resolve it.
