Open Relay

Hi,

Does anybody know if NTL provide an open relay on there mail server or do we have to use smtp.ntlworld.com for sending outgoing emails.

Also do NTL limit the amount of send sent out at the time if so how many? And is there a size limit on this?

Thanks for all your help in advanced

Andy

Re: Open Relay

They do not provide an open relay. You can only send email via smtp.ntlworld if you are using your own PC connected to the net via your NTL internet. You can, however, sign up to alternative email providers who offer a smtp service, and access them from your NTL internet service.

I don't know what limits, if any, they impose, but if they do I imagine they will be well within the normal limits for contacting all your friends, or members of a club or society you may be secretary of. After all, you're not trying to spam thousands of addresses are you, as that would breach your terms and conditions.

to the site by the way.

Re: Open Relay

So if im not restricted to using NTL's SMTP server and can use other SMTP services there must be an open relay. No im not tryin to spam anybody just send quite a few emails to friends and family about an upcoming party.

Re: Open Relay

Other SMTP services are not necessarily open relay, they usually work by requiring you to have authenticated a POP3 connection prior to using the SMTP connection (so it is not open), anyhow that is their server that is open, not one on NTLs network.

You are misunderstanding what 'open relay' means. An open relay is an SMTP server that anyone can connect to, without authentication, to send email. In allowing you to access SMTP servers other than their own, NTL is not creating an open relay.
