What does this look like to you?

I can't access the internet any more apart from pings and traceroutes. So far this is what I've done:

- Rebooted everything, my router, the modem and my PC
- Removed the router and connected my PC directly to the modem
- Tired different network cables between the modem and my PC
- Used a different network port on my PC

I can see the lights flashing on my NIC on the PC but on the modem the "ETH" light hardly ever flashes if at all. I also called technical support and they couldn't ping the modem so I have an engineer booked this comin monday.

Does this sound like a problem with the modem to you? I wantt o make sure cos a) I don't want to waste the engineer's time and b) if I can get it working my end thats quicker than waiting until monday.

I'm going to try another PC on the connection tonight and see if anything changes. This seemed to start on Tuesday at the same time ntl seemed to be doing some nationwide upgrades. I'm in Leicester, if that helps.

-Thanks

Re: What does this look like to you?

Sounds like your internet isnt working to me

Check that your PC is getting the correct IP Address, not a 16x.xx.xx.xx address.

Check the cable coming from outside is screwed into the modem correctly. Ive had a couple of problems with it coming loose before.

See if anyone else in your road is having a problem. It could be local.

Re: What does this look like to you?

Does your PC get a valid IP address (ipconfig from DOS prompt - should begin something like 81.nnn.nnn.nnn - valid NTL address ranges can be found here)?

If so, can you browse to http://192.168.100.1/ (the CM user interface). If you can get that far the CM is working (and talking to the UBR).

When you do the IPconfig you should also get a field called 'default gateway'. This should be the IP of the 'UBR'. Can you ping this address?

If all the above works you are getting on to NTL's network. Next step would be to try ftp upload.ntlworld.com from DOS prompt - this bypasses any broken transparent web caches.

Re: What does this look like to you?

Thanks for the quick replies everyone, I run Linux on all my PC's at home so I can't run the Windows programs. I'm going to reinstall everything on my aspare server tonight and test the connection with that to make sure it's not my desktop PC thats to blame, although I haven't changed anything on that this week.

Aragorn, I sucessfully logged into the modem's control panel (but I haven't changed anything) and I'll try to ftp to upload.ntlworld.com tonight, I'll also try and ping the UBR. Also it does get a valid ip starting 82.18.x.x which is what puzzles me so much, I'll have a good test tonight and see what happens.

-Thanks

Re: What does this look like to you?

If you are getting a good IP address and FTP works, you could also try :

telnet www.bbc.co.uk 80 from a shell - this will verify you get get out on port 80 and will also verify DNS. If it can't find an address for the bbc site, the IP is 212.58.224.83.

If that works, try using an alternate proxy in FFox (or fav browser ) as described here.

Re: What does this look like to you?

Just to update, I got it working. It turns out I was given a "pre registration IP" and once the technical help desk deleted and re added my cable modem account (or something similar) it started to work.

Not a nice experience over all but it is fixed so not much harm done. I did call the help desk twice before and they said they couldn't help me ( which was why the engineer was booked) it was only through my persistence and investigation (and people's help here) that I got them on the right track. However after an hour or two on the phone they told me it was costing me something like £1 per minute so I may have got it working again but at what cost? We'll see I suppose because I plan on requesting a refund for the days where my service was down and a refund on my calls to the technical support as this was not my fault.

Re: What does this look like to you?

it wasn't costing you £1 a minute, unless you found an 0906 number to dial. Technical Services is on an 0845 number, so about tuppence a minute.

SUSE is easy to set up for the internet. This does assume that you are using a NIC to connect not USB.

I use a router between STB and PC and Linux is no harder to setup than Windoze. For me easier since I know UNIX better than MS.

If by dificult you mean plug in cable and click firefox icon yeah it is...

You say you can ping sites?
Is this via IP or name?
Could just be the DNS server aint working, which happens to me about 100 times a week :-)
Gave up on NTL DNS years ago.

As for tech support, it used to be 31 a min way back when, but its all 4.5p a min now (National Rate)
