Of course it's a real speed test - in fact it's the best speed test for ntl customers because it's all internal to the ntl network, so it's not affected by any other issues external to ntl's control. External network tests are subject to the whim of all the interconnecting network/routers etc. Please do not confuse people by talking about things you do not appear to understand.

3 cheers for the explanation

other site people can try for proper external testing

http://www.abeltronica.com/velocimet...=uk&newlang=uk

and for ftp proxyless external traffic

ftp.mirror.ac.uk

Paul he is right about the peering. their are other points of congestion under ntl's control that affect internet traffic. The ubr simply takes the traffic to ntl's core network and then their are varios pipes leaving that core network out to the internet, these pipes can and some do get full.

Your test is very useful tho to see if slow speeds are caused by the ubr.

Re: Slow speeds on 10 Meg

I indeed had the same problems as the first poster and still do to this day, its not a fault of the modem, the pc or the router, as the person said - it was excellent on the weekends for example. If you try the same tested @ 1am or later, you will find the speeds JUMP right upto 10mbit but during Peak times you will see the speeds go as low as 30kB/Sec for example. The reason (even if NTL dont want to admit this) is too many people attached to the UBR are indeed Canning the connection, dragging down the speeds. Tech Support said that the LOWEST you *shoud* get is 2mbit speeds but this is not true, no matter what speed test site you use.

If the connection worked at *some point* on 10mbit (or close to), assume that the network is congestied and its working as it should..

Re: Slow speeds on 10 Meg

Well my main point is I accept contention but I would expect improved performance when I upgrade over any given point of the day, and I have an effectively downgraded service during peak hours getting less then I did on my 2mbit which wasnt great either but was at least somewhat above 1mbit the tier below it.

Re: Slow speeds on 10 Meg

Hello guys

Im a new member and just found this forum while reading an article on msn about NTL and they gave a link to this forum

Anyway..im having the same problem as Caroline. I have 3MB internet from NTL but i've seen no improvement whatsoever in my speeds. I rang NTL to see if i had been upgraded and they said yes and i should be getting faster speed and they suggested turning off my modem and PC and turn it all on again which i did but its exactly the same

Now i dunno what to do..i have the silver 200 modem and its connected via ethernet (no router at the moment) and im getting steady 3 Mb speeds from all the tests i've done. Anyone got any suggestions ?

I really want the faster upload speed more than the download speed..NTL upload speed has always sucked..lol. This is what im getting at the moment.

Thanks for any help

DavidC, to CableForum.

Despite what NTL have, it sounds like the modem is still on the slower speeds.

Re: Slow speeds on 10 Meg

I've just posted a message in *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3).

To summarise, Broadband Technical Support told me tonight that 10Mb is still in the "trial phase" and won't go live until the end of the month.

And here's me thinking it was officially launched on Monday...

Re: Slow speeds on 10 Meg

Since NTL swapped my STB connection for a 250 modem, I've not ad anything close to the 3mbs I originally had. Pre and post upgrade I've run adslguide and teh quick speed test. A friend close got his STB upgraded today and has seen a drop of around 1mb. My modem thinks its on 10mbs, I even get 512 upload speeds. I'm in Macclesfield should anyone else in the area be having similar issues. TS just play the usual games, modem off, on, spyware, anti virus...

I had this issue two weeks before the official launch, never getting about 2.5mbs so I'm not 100% certain it is congestion.

1st 512K took 859 ms = 596 KB/sec, approx 4911 Kbps, 4.8 Mbps
2nd 512K took 875 ms = 585.1 KB/sec, approx 4821 Kbps, 4.71 Mbps
3rd 512K took 860 ms = 595.3 KB/sec, approx 4905 Kbps, 4.79 Mbps
4th 512K took 906 ms = 565.1 KB/sec, approx 4656 Kbps, 4.55 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 4823 Kbps, 4.71 Mbps
