at 5.5kb/sec constant (24/7) download speeds (more or less the max you could get out of a 56.2k modem), over a 30 day period you could download:
14256000 kb or 13921.875 mb or 13.5955810546875 gb of information.
So sure, it was technically unlimited but 5 years ago you could only physically download 13.5gb of stuff over dial up.
Now we can download (with the cap) 5.5 times as much information per month, but at the insanely stupid 250x faster (or more).
So 250x the speed, 5.5x the amount we can download.
If they had given us 250x the amounts we could download it would be 3,375 gigabytes (3.4 TB) of stuff.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I heard from a little birdie now that ntl have managed to saturate all their linx ports, and have no plans to upgrade them in the near future and rather just hoping the traffic level drops (they havent responded to other isp's who queuried ntl about the saturation so it is assumed they have no plans), so they think with upgrading burst speed upto 10 times for some customers, double the cap and with mass tv streaming on our doorstep traffic will drop So I got news for you people we are all in for a surprise unless they change their policy on peering capacity. If a speedtest reports a low speed it does not make it inaccurate or mean its the speedtest server's fault, it is much more likely a peering congestion between ntl and that server. Robin walker and paul's speedtest are simply traffic that doesnt leave ntl's network and isnt an indication of ntl's true internet performance, adslguide speedtest is somewhat more reliable for that, but a lot of speedtest's will use a proxy so that will affect results as well. If you want a true speedtest login to a linux ftp mirror and start downloading an iso.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
sorry whats reciprocol mean?
If you mean peering as in they dont pay for the traffic passing over it, that may or may not be the case I dont know. But the size of the port they would be responsible for.

What do you think is causing the traffic to come to a near standstill during peak hours? Person gets 10mbit, immedialty goes off to speed test sites or downloads a ISO to see if they have indeed got the rated 10mbit. The download might come in at 5-8Mbit and the person is not happy, so off they go to another site and grab another file etc etc etc.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Still on 3mb in SK5 area....
Robin Walker speed test:
Wed, 07 Dec 2005 10:45:01 GMT
1st 128K took 344 ms = 381023 Bytes/sec = approx 3170 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 687 ms = 190789 Bytes/sec = approx 1587 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 313 ms = 418760 Bytes/sec = approx 3484 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec
and the modem config thingy reads:
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 3072000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 300000 bps
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr
maybe we're not quite enabled here, I don't know and I don't really feel inclined to stand in a freezing cold phone box to find out from Indian Support Centre that I'm to do the usual 'reboot everything' procedure, especially when it' been done as a regular practice around these parts because I like to live in hope that the speed fairy does visit this particular area and waves her magic wand. On the other hand... reading posts about awful speed on 10mb, I don't know if I'm better off this way and should be happy with my 3mb connection.
Yup, I'm using the silver armpit 120... time for an upgrade if nothing happens soon? I dunno.. I'm not technical enough to understand it all.
I'm concerned because the radio show I host needs a good stable connection and if there's too many probs with 10mb... well.. I'm better as I am... aren't I?
I'm also considering networking the two computers there are here... (as opposed to switching the connection between the two computers which means giving my partner a long cold hard stare to "hand the ****ing connection over.. NOW!!" )
That.. along with everything else.. I don't know what to do.. lol! help?!
Either way, things have a habit of sorting themselves out... well, so my logic tells me. One thing is for sure... 'the power of 10'.... 10 what? 10 phone calls to CS??? it's feeling like that here!
"We use the modem lights as Christmas lights... we're not stupid.. they're prettier, cost nowt and it's surprising what a little tinsel around the box can do"

Ref Point 1, the speeds will effect (I think) all users from 1-10mbit because you are all on the Same ubr? Its crap at the moment as everybody is Cannig there connections with this new found Speed you see !!
Ref Point 2 - Your on a Home connection, no Guarantee of any service due to the small price you pay. The Hosting of a radio station thingy anyhow is UPLOAD not download (they download it) so you will go from 300k to 500K with new connection and thus be better. Since I have had 10mbit the Upload is Rock Solid @ 500K.
Ref Point 3 - You will be much better off Buyng a Router - just make sure you do not buy a ADSL One. It should have on the back a WAN Port (RJ45) and some LAN Ports (also RJ45), hile your there make sure it supports a 10/100 WAN port, a lot don't and this will restrict yout speed later. I bought Mine at Staples, a Linksys Wireless Router + PCMCIA Card - 54Mbit thing. Works fine and only cost me £50.

Most of these speedtest sites like paul's last a few seconds, if they try the linux iso I dont know how many would abort or download the whole file, but to be honest that should be irrelevant ntl have set a cap level of 75gig, they should design the network to be able to handle everyone using up to 75gig.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
On the back of my Terayon TJ210 it says 10M ethernet, does this mean that I wont get the full 10mbit? Im only getting 5Mbit max, my router is the Belkin F5D7230-4 and i have 54g cards...I'm told the router is fine. >.< any ideas?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Motorola Surfboard SB3100i since Dec 1999: Tamworth, Staffs
Just tried CS to get a replacement modem to give me the full 10Mb/s service, and was told that I would be charged £50:
(Currently getting 5-6Mb/s due to restrictions on Ethernet port being 10Mb/s half duplex).
After further discussion, CS said they would reduce the fee to £25. CS wouldn't budge on this even though I pointed out that the modem was hired from them and not fit for the service being provided. CS kept insisting that it was a modem identified as needing an upgrade and consequently chargeable because modem was suitable for the original contract speed (In 1999)!!
Let's see. NTL upgrade to 10 Mb/s. No longer offer 3Mb/s. New customer gets new modem fit for the purpose, even with discounts in some cases.
Existing customer gets charged £25. If account was closed, Modem would NOT be collected or returned to NTL, I would be asked to dispose of it. Ask for a new account perhaps in partner's name. New modem would be supplied free of charge, may even get a discount into the bargain.
Where is the incentive for customer loyalty NTL??
Can anyone tell me if you have managed to get the 3100 replaced, how you did it and in which area you are connected to? I seem to be banging my head against a brick wall here.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Like I said in another post...
Dont bother speaking to cs, apart from asking them to put you through to retentions... they'll soon sort it out for free if you tell them your closing your account! I got my samsung replaced for the new --==superfast 250, absolutely FREE! Take charge of your accounts, show them who's boss! at the end of the day you are paying their wages. CHOP! CHOP!

Dodger444, thanks for that.
I'll try that and see what happens.
