This alone takes up a far amount of useage, and really no different with what will be offered later anyway by most Tv companies via the internet, so if the usage allowance isn't high enough now yet people are happy with such a low limit, then there's not much hope for the future.
10meg really should be 150gigs per month for top tier.

Most of my downloads are TV shows. Legally it's a grey area, but I'm yet to hear of anyone that's been arrested for doing it. Morally, I see no problems with it. I pay for my TV license and Sky subscription, it's not like anyone loses out because of it.

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
Give it a few weeks/months and this argument will go out the window, as with Sky by Broadband, you can download a bundle of films, sports events, etc, all for free if you are already a customer of those packages. All legal and above board. Each film probably taking up about 1gb of bandwidth. Add to this the up and coming service from the BBC, including full streaming of BBC2, and suddenly caps will be very restrictive, even to the average user.

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
hello im new to forum . my friend was on the 3 meg service and as a heavy user 600+gig per month he was down graded to 512 . he received the warning letter and ignored it and paid the price . he has since canceled all ntl services in favor of bulldog who have no cap. and now ukonline have introduced 24meg in glasgow where i live just need to wait till bt upgrade the exchange and most users in glasgow will leave ntl since bulldog is cheaper than ntl even with the drop in price..ntl need to drop the cap at some point as companys are starting to drop it . as far as i know aol have no cap (i maybe wrong) ..anyhow ive been with ntl since the start and may have to leave due to being a heavy user in the last 3 months ....

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
NTL was 1 of the cheapest broadband provider when i joined
but now alot of ISP is cheaper and without a cap
with NTLs broadband as a standalone product its not as competitive anymore
with its price and cap
every NTL BB user might be getting 10MB soon but with the cap i rather have 8mb with no cap
what the hell i would have a lower speed
would have gone bulldog if i didnt have to change phone lines to them
well NTL is still good money if u get cable TV and phone line with them
but i dont think its is very good if u just want broadband (like me)
EDIT:
oops just read other threads regarding NTL drooping BB price for top teir
well nice of them to drop the price to the same as Telewest
but Telewest doesnt have a cap yet (with the merge i think it will happen soon)

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
I can see ntl adopting the telewest packages as the standard with the benefit being no caps & differing speeds

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
Dont know how true this is but a mate spoke to an NTL engineer who was having a drink in the pub and he says NTL plan to introduce varable billing.
example:
1Mb connection -> 3gb - 30gb
2Mb connection -> 31gb - 75gb
10Mb connection -> 75gb - 150gb
if your usage is anywhere between the 3 - 30Gb a month then you get charged the 1Mb tarrif, go over that you automatically get charged the next higher tarrif, so even if you have signed up for a 1mb connection and you use 40Gb in a month then you get billed the 2mb connection, use 75gb+ a month then you get billed the 10Mb tarrif ie: you pay for what you use, they will provide a monitoring software to every user, and a online server package that will alert you as you approach the new limits, it will pop up an acceptance ticket that you are aware that you will be billed a higher tarrif once you go over the set usage limits.
New unlimited tarrifs will be introduced for users that breach the 150gb a month on a regular basis.
If this is true then personally I wouldnt have any problems using it, saves ****ing about upgrading downgrading as the need arises and I only pay for what I actually use.
It could have its advantages for users that subscribe to the higher tarrifs but dont use it that much during some months, means they actually receive a lower bill, reflected by their usage.
this would probably explain how 1 and 2 Mb users also get upgraded to the 10Mb service later next year?

AOL says its unlimited but in reality it isn't i personally know people that have had warning letters froim AOL, ukonline are the same my sister in law received a very nice letter from ukonline asking her to moderate her online usage. Most isp's who advertise no caps just hide behind a fair usage clause IMO advertising no caps till it gets beyond a joke and impacts on other users then the caps will begin. As an aside what the hell is someone downloading 600 gig a month?

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
Syco - Sounds like something they have heard / made up and as stories go on they change along the way. A Lot of ISP have gone now to the model where everyone gets 2mbit (or as fast as your line will take) on ADSL and the difference in price is the usage per month - so a LITE User gets say 3 GIG month and pays £14.99 where as a heavy user might pay £29.99 for example.
Doofy - To answer your question, there is a few ways you can look at this - a Person with one connection but a few people using it - such as a family might well clock up a big D/L a month say even though they are not doing anything Illegal. The other side of the coin is you can get stuff via News Servers (NTL Provide one with content) and P2P which then also starts clocking your Uploads as well. You asked though what the hell they are downloading to hit 600GIG month (and maybe were are they storing this?) well Movies, Games, MP3, general useage and probably leaving it downloading 24/7. Games are getting bigger (DVD in Size), with increased speeds you can also grab DVD Un-Compressed (well not DivX Anyhow) etc etc etc.
The best idea I saw for Caps was a rather simple model - 1am - 8am not counted...but pointless talking about how and why anyhooo, NTL (and ISP's) will carry on doing whatever it is they want to do

mauldor. i say your right whatever they want to do they will.thats what the small print and terms and conditions may change at any time without consent is all about. when i signed up to ntls dial up service the conditions had no cap as you would never have downloaded 600gig a month ..this was my mates question to ntl when they downgraded him . and yes when you have a family you can download 600 gig

Weird, my family don't even manage 60, actually not even 10 hrm.
Not realy ntl's problem if the entire family have different tastes in downloading dodginess to be honest, either deal with it or move elsewhere, that's your choice and right.
Being frank again extreme downloading isn't necessary by anyone for any reason, those who do are likely to be
a) Unemployed chavs with nothing better to do than leech and watch movies / play games / watch porn and masturbate 24x7.
b) Hoarders with an obsession to download the internet, which is more of a mental issues thing or:
c) Ignorant people who don't even hoard the stuff and just download because they 'pay for it 24x7 and should use it as such'.
Note my use of the word extreme before you jump on me. Even a couple of hundred gigs a month can be used depending on what you're downloading, but when you get into the hundreds it just gets silly.
Anyway even those of you on 512k download have a somewhat faster service than me, a certain company having completely fecked up my order I'm now without any high speed internet until 16th December.

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
ignition you maybe right on 1 or 2 points but what do you use the internet for ? 1 i certainly don,t need it for porn or to wa*k and if i caught my kids d/l porn id ban them from the computer . and take their ipods off them.im not a hoarder i d/l games for kids (keeps them quiet) as for my wife i like to think the only thing she hoards is my credit cards . the real point here is the companys such as ntl having the balls to rip us off . i have been on the internet a long time and paid for it for a long time and never d/l a thing till now and im not saying im entitled to it but im going to use it like ive no tomorrow .. ntl and other providers need to learn there is more than one person in households useing the same or more than one computer also what about people that don,t know much about computers with wireless conections . i know that in my street there are 5 as i scanned for wireless connections with a pda and found all 5 and if i wanted used these connections as they were all open ..

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
Sorry but I'm still struggling to see how anyone can justify downloading the ammounts of data that I have seen mentioned in this thread. There are 3 computers here attached to the NTL connection and through normal browsing, emails, fourm work, uploading images etc we struggle to use more than 5 gigs a month. Even when I download a linux distro or Autopatcher pack I struggle to impact our usage allowance.
How are NTL being unfair in asking users to not abuse the network bandwidth? I think you would struggle to find an ISP that doesn't have a cap or mention a fair usage policy within their contractual small print.
As for wireless networks, those people who allow their networks to be abused will soon learn the hard way that they need to secure them properly but yes there are a lot of people joining the "Internet Revolution" who really need to be guided through things before being unleashed onto the network.

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
Can any of you so called normal users that dont use your cap usage give me one good reason as to why you need a 10 meg connection.
I was on 3 meg now on 10 meg so can tell the difference in like sending emails with content.
My average usage is anything from 30gig to 150gig month depends on whats out at the time.
The reason i ask my lad paid for and d/l 4 talking books for school work that came out to just over a gig for the 4 the 2 kids could easly hit 30 gig between them playing games online, litening to streamed music and vidio plus a 1001 pics thay send to mates. and thats without me and the wife.
