Difficulty connecting...

I am trying to assist a friend who has cable. I am not familiar with the system, so please bear with me!

He currently has one computer running Windows 98 SE which connects to the NTL HOME 200 service modem via an ethernet cable. Settings in 98 indicate a dynamically assigned IP Address, with DNSs 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100. This works ok.

1st problem: Tried connecting my laptop directly to the modem instead of his Win98 machine, same TCP/IP settings etc etc. Zilch. Cat5e cable is ok, and laptop (when set up) will connect fine to an ADSL router. What am I missing here?

2nd problem: He has a Sitecom Home Station WL-018 which I'm trying to setup to allow several computers to connect. I'm connecting it's WAN port to the NTL modem, and setting it for dynamic IP. The Sitecom's WAN l.e.d. is solid indicating a connection ok, and laptop connects to the Sitecom's webpage interface. But no internet. Maybe this Sitecom model is not suitable for direct connection to a cable modem?

Any help or pointers appreciated thanks.

Re: Difficulty connecting...

ADSL router? Hope not as that is the wrong sort of router.
When you tried connecting to his connection did you power of the cable modem, change computers, power up cable modem, wait for lights to settle, power up PC?
You also need to follow this route when trying to change to a router as it needs to pick up the router info when it starts up.
If it doesn't work then try cloning the MAC address of the PC that is working on the connection into the router so that the NTL modem thinks the router is the PC that it already works with.

Re: Difficulty connecting...

Thanks for that Paul...

Well, as far as I can see the Sitecom WL-018 says it's suitable for, "multiple computers to a broadband (cable or DSL) modem...". I only mentioned the ADSL router as that's what I use myself, and I know my laptop talks to that without any problems.

No, didn't try powering off the cable modem. Certainly the Sitecom device was powered off and on several times.

As a check, is it possoble to ping the cable modem?

Re: Difficulty connecting...

Don't know if the modem will respond to pings to be honest. If the connection is working properly with one PC then it's just a case of registering the router with the modem.
Try the power cycle routine first,
Shutdown PC,
power off router,
power off cable modem,
wait 2 or 3 mins (5 to be really safe)
power up cable modem,
wait for lights to settle/ lock,
power up router,
wait for lights to settle,
power up PC.

It's the same routine when switching any equipment on the modem connection as the new equipment has to be registered/ provisioned against your account.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...ips/badip.html has more info on swapping equipment on the modem connection.
If all else fails, connect the original PC back to the modem, when it's working do an Ipconfig /all from a CMD box and note down the MAC address. Clone this into the router and then save and restart everything, after that the connection should work properly as the modem will see the router as the PC that it already works with.

Re: Difficulty connecting...

Ok thanks for the info Paul, and also that URL - very interesting. Next time I'm over at his house I'll give what you suggested a whirl...

Re: Difficulty connecting...

You should be able to ping the CM on 192.168.100.1

BTW, from what I can find on the WL-018 it should connect to the ntl CM fine.
