Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Just to reassure people, it IS worth perservering to get the 10Mbit upgrade! The first person I spoke to in CS told me I would have it 'by end 2006'!!! The second try yielded the answer that 'new customers can have it now, but existing ones will get it mid-Dec, this is due to a problem with our systems'.

The third person told me the same, but escalated to his supervisor when I complained that I was being penalised for signing up earlier, which I did on the promise I'd be 'at the front of the queue for 10Mbit'. He also told me his system did not allow upgrade to 10Mbit. Miraculously(!), after he came back, he suddenly 'mended' his system, and before the end of the call my NTL 250 modem had rebooted itself and I was connected at 10Mbit!

Moral of the story - just keep calling back, use option 2 or 5, and eventually someone will help you!!

Similar story, just keep trying, on my 3 attempt - this time stating a how a friend of mine is a new customer and got offered the new service at 10mb but as an existing customer I am still on 3mb. They explained about how new customers get newer modems that work and NTL will be solving the older modem issues. I said I wanted it anyhow. (I think the issue may be related to duplex -- half of 10mb which is about 5mb). So I have now been upgraded and he didnt even need to talk to a supervisor.

Will be awaiting to see if my speed does in deed increase.

It will increase, but it may not go all the way up to 10Mb as yet. They have started updating modem firmware, but I suspect if your modem is really old and actually has to be swapped for a new one, you may have a little time to wait yet.

Even so, you ought to get about 5Mb if not the full 10. And yes, duplexing (or lack of) is the issue.

My modem is a Terayon TJ 210. - Its old now. Its meant to be capable of about 7mbits rather than 10. But most people are saying anywhere from 5mb to 7mb on the 10mb service. Basically will need a modem upgrade.

Cool Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Tue, 22 Nov 2005 11:47:42 UTC

1st 512K took 1454 ms = 360583 KB/sec, approx 2971 Kbps, 2.9 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1453 ms = 360831 KB/sec, approx 2973 Kbps, 2.9 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1437 ms = 364849 KB/sec, approx 3006 Kbps, 2.94 Mbps
4th 512K took 1453 ms = 360831 KB/sec, approx 2887 Kbps, 2.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2959 Kbps, 2.89 Mbps

i've rebooted, but I am still on old service for now.. How long does it take usually.

Been having exactly the same problem with an ntl100. Had an engineer out today who tested the line in the house. He then went outside and tested the line coming into the house. When he came back in he said that a couple of connections were a bit loose, probably due to traffic vibrations, and he's nipped them up. Said he was 99% sure that would fix the problem but if it didn't to ring tech support again. Just tested it and as you said as soon as the upload went over 40k it rebooted. Looks like I'll be on the phone to tech support again tomorrow as the account is in my wifes name and she needs to be here when I ring

Angry Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

well, still only getting 3mb so I thought I would call NTL Broadband support, the following is what I was told...

"Its only in test, you will have to wait until january."

so to recap.

On normal support line (0800) after 3 attempts I was told I am now on 10mb.
On Broadband suppoirt line (0845) I am told not until January.

Wow thats very interesting. I suppose I am being given the fob off.

I will wait and see any responses on this from this forum.

I'm in reading. Is anyone else in reading on 10mb - more than 3mb working that is?

Smile Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I couldnt wait, so impatient, well, I had been promised it. Plus off today so best day to get in contact and get things sorted.

Well, I called back the first number (0800) and explained what had happened, they said its probably due to my modem. Can you recheck, I asked. He said ok, then said, oh you are only on 3mb, I will now upgrade you, but you may not get full 10mb and it can fluctuate.

Well my lights flickered and now...

Tue, 22 Nov 2005 13:10:40 UTC

1st 512K took 703 ms = 745787 KB/sec, approx 6145 Kbps, 6 Mbps
2nd 512K took 656 ms = 799220 KB/sec, approx 6586 Kbps, 6.43 Mbps
3rd 512K took 657 ms = 798003 KB/sec, approx 6576 Kbps, 6.42 Mbps
4th 512K took 672 ms = 780190 KB/sec, approx 6242 Kbps, 6.1 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 6387 Kbps, 6.24 Mbps

So my modem is the problem as I already knew for full 10mb, but they obviously did nothing before.

So call back until you see at least an slight (or major) improvement to throughput (bandwidth).

Thanks to all. Just keep on trying.

Next will be to get my modem upgraded..... will give them a few days or I will fill up there voice recording system!!! I am now a happy customer.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I foolishly thought that if I phoned up CS option 5 instead of option 2 this time I might have been in with a chance of being upgraded, so I dialled the number waited patiently and spoke to a very polite man, I expalined that i'd like to be upgraded from 3mb as I new a few people who had already been upgraded, he asked me to wait and the phone went quiet, when he came back he said that "due to problems with the upgrade and he aknowledged that people had already been upgraded and due to the problems these people were having NTL had stopped upgrading further accounts until these problems had been fixed, and that would be wait for it sometime in December!!!!

Well I'm not going to bother phoning again and will wait for the contact that NTL said I would receive from them when the upgrade is ready to start again!!!!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I have to agree that it depends who you speak to in CS as to whether you go on the 10mb trial or not.
The chap I spoke to explained that their was no problem with going on the trial, as long as i understood that the speed would fluctuate between 3-10 MB until the official upgrade in mid December.
I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at the ease at which i was transfered and the polite and officiant ntl staff member I spoke to.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Leanne, a nice scottish bird at CS said she can upgrade me to anything upto 10mb. She said it would happen within the hour. Modem just rebooted but i'm still on shoddy speeds.

Where exactly do you check your firmware version cos i can't seem to find it?

Edit: I seem to be downloading at 4mb speeds. Speeds of around 420k/s dropping and rising

Edit 2: I've got an Ambit 200 modem.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I've just been told by NTL Broadband support that the Terayon modem can cope with the 10mb connection as it gets a firmware upgrade from the server.

Does anyone know if this is correct. I hope it is.
Currently I'm getting half the connection (about 5mb d/l)

Cheers all

Log on to your modem (192.168.100.1), and you should find the version in the help tab.
