Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I've just spoken to ntl CS (Scottish call centre) and was told that they are still conducting regional trials and that any upgrades may be only temporary and speeds would fluctuate for those who had been upgraded , although he did say that all 3meg customers would have a permanent upgrade by the end of the year.
I'm in Newmarket in Suffolk on 3meg.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
OK had a play about for some info on ignoreProvisioningUpgrade
Quote:
|
Firmware upgrades are done from the provider side, meaning it would be quite easy for affected modems to be fixed with a new release
|
Quote:
|
Preventing the firmware upgrade, or downgrading the firmware, is trivial (docsDevSwAdminStatus -> ignoreProvisioningUpgrade)
|
Quote:
From a network management station, the operator:
sets docsDevSwServer to the address of the TFTP server for software upgrades
sets docsDevSwFilename to the file pathname of the software upgrade image
sets docsDevSwAdminStatus to upgrade-from-mgt
|
Quote:
If set to upgradeFromMgt(1), the device will initiate a TFTP software image download using docsDevSwFilename. After successfully receiving an image, the device will set its state to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade(3) and reboot. If the download process is interrupted by a reset or power failure, the device will load the previous image and, after re-initialization, continue to attempt loading the image specified in docsDevSwFilename.
If set to allowProvisioningUpgrade(2), the device will use the software version information supplied by the provisioning server when next rebooting (this does not cause a reboot).
When set to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade(3), the device will disregard software image upgrade information from the provisioning server.
Note that reading this object can return upgradeFromMgt(1). This indicates that a software download is currently in progress, and that the device will reboot after successfully receiving an image.
At initial startup, this object has the default value of allowProvisioningUpgrade(2)."
|
Now this is just a rehash of information but from what I understand is that when your modem is NEW it is set to allowProvisioningUpgrade and it checks the server for a firmware and downloads and installs it and sets to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade.
When NTL decide that you need a speed change (downgrade OR upgrade) they send a signal to your modem to go to allowProvisioningUpgrade then either send a signal to reboot or ask you to reboot. Modem reboots and checks server for a new firmware/software downloads installs and reboots.
So, if you are set to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade you are at the hands of NTL untill they decide you are allowed the upgrade. If you have allowProvisioningUpgrade, REBOOT! as you just be have been permitted to the upgrade.
I may be completely wrong and probably are but what do others think?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Just spoke to a nice bloke in the welsh call centre who says that 'I will do that for you, please hold the line, came back a min later and said thats been done your upgraded to 10mb'.
Ive reset my modem (150) but the increase hasnt happened yet, how long does it take for the new config to be sent to the modem?.
when i login to my modem what do i need to look for in the configuration pages/status pages to indicate that the new config file has come through?
Cheers.

Samsung Settop boxes and 10mbs
Ok here goes my first post... I have been reading the site for ages and decided, today, now is the time to contribute.
I gave the 0800 number a call this morning, having tried a tier migration last night. I'm told by the chappy on the phone that most places have cable modems except this one (East Cheshire). He went on to say that the STBs from Samsung were not able to do 10Mbs and that he would send an engineer (Tuesday next week). The engineer will fit me a cable modem. I did have to fill in a new direct debit mandate - strange ! Anyway thought the above may be of intrest to someone...
A good friend (also a reader of this board), in the same area, phoned 2 minutes after me and was told that he will get a new STB, 10MBS enabled, in December.
Be good.

yes, but the hit to the modem had to be sent again because if as stated earlier there was an automic rollout to all people with NTLhome150 modems, the nice guy said my logs never received it.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Phoned NTL CS 3 times today got the following conflicting answers -
#1 - Samsung STB can support 10meg, its in my area, we can't volunteer ourselfs to be upgraded...
#2 - Only cable modems can get it, STB's will get it next year
#3 - STB's CAN'T support it, will need to get a cable modem
WTF?!?
I find it stupid how they upgraded us from the PACE STB's to the Samsung STB's only to replace them all with cable modems for the ppl wanting 10megs.
Anyone been upgraded by CS who's on a STB ? if so what did you say to them? (and possibly the name of the person you spoke to)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
finally was tempted to call CS for a upgrade (all u 10mb users grrr)
a nice lady told me it was on trial and saying i would most likely not get 10mb but should get upto 8mb
doesnt sounds like she wanted to upgraded me
but i asked if i can trial it
she said she'll try and upgrade me
after a couple of mins she said the system wont let her
and said maybe my area aint updated/upgraded or something
told me i should keep trying calling back once in awhile
to see if i could get upgraded
btw im in Bournemouth with a NTL 120 modem
and still using ntlhm120_ntl0001.cpr firmware with allowProvisioningUpgrade (tried restarting SACM)
should every NTL 120 SACM been updated??
