Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

OK, i rang the number, got through to a very nice Scottish woman, had no problems, knew about the 10mb upgrade, but couldn't get into my account for some reason, so passed me over to CS, some hard faced phone monkey, with a very stern scottish accent! She wouldn't let me do anything, unless i got the bill holder to talk... so i had to go downstairs, ring back with the bill holder ready... got through to a really nice Scottish guy, very friendly and willing to help, he didn't even need the bill payer, accepted all the security questions etc.

So he put me on 10mb!! Told me to reboot and turn off the modem for 2 mins etc, knew what he was talking about.
I turned the modem off for 2 mins, rebooted my PC, and bang!
I'm on 10mb! (see attached image)

However, at the moment i'm still actually getting 3mb speeds. Not sure if it's because of my network not being ready, etc. I'm on an NTL Ambit 120 modem, no router etc. Could it be the modem? Or is there any windows settings i need to change to make use of the faster speeds? I'm connected through USB.

I got through to a Scottish call centre when I commenced the number with 0141 (and this was after dialing the Manchester code on another phone - I am not from either area) but the lady couldn't access my account due to the post code being out of her area.

So it's possible all down to area and call centre area.

Try, try and try again. It seems to depend on who you get - and you are on 3Mbps, so should get the upgrade.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Anybody who had their eyes open when the last speed increases were undertaken could have predicted exactly how this thread would have developed today.

Not all customers can get the upgraded speeds in the first days of availability because they either have the wrong equipment or are in an area where further network improvement has to be done.

If you are in an area where the upgraded speeds are available then you will be upgraded to the new speeds automatically at a time that NTL has scheduled for you. This will more than likely be those on the highest tier first. Like the previous speed upgrades the latest upgrades will take place over several months. How long it takes to upgrade the entire customer base will depend on how the network copes as each new section of customers is migrated to the new speeds. The more network abusers that there are on the new speeds, the longer it will probably take to complete migration.

If you are the middle or bottom tier, live in an area that has the upgraded speeds available and have the right equipment than you will be able to do just the same as you could last time, upgrade online from day one. There are several reasons why online speed upgrades are not possible, some of which may be circumvented with a call to customer services.

Anyone who went through the previous speed upgrades and was a member of Cableforum would know exactly what was in store this time and how to ensure they were amongst the first to receive the upgrade.

My very nice lady assured me, with utter conviction, that there is NO
10mb service available until 2006 for 3mb modem customers.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

OK here are the facts.

I am on 10mb now.

New customers will automatically be put on 10mb for the top tier, anyone requesting to be upgraded to the top tier will automatically be put on 10mb and existing 3mb customers have to request it. CS can tell you that you will automatically get it in December, but don't have to tell you that you can demand it immediately. If you demand it immediately you should get it immediately, if someone tells you otherwise, ask to speak to someone different as they are wrong. Ask the customer services representive to re-read their email that they were sent and they will see that existing 3mb customers can demand to be put on 10mb instantly.

Hope this helps.

I have both, but lord knows which one i'm using. lol. Would it make a difference? I have no idea where my ethernet cable is (at the time when i got my ntl modem, my motherboard hated the netgear card, so i opted for USB), which is a shame, cos i know it's preferred.

I'll swap over the USB connection, see if it helps any, 2 of them are USB 2, it'll be like a lottery.

THe upload speed is perfect though, very fast.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Just rang CS and was told that its not available to existing customers just yet, only to ones who have been notified that they are to partake in any speed upgrades (sent via a letter) - there's no clarity at all on what the deal is.
