@Rhiannon
May I suggest Netmeter? http://readerror.gmxhome.de/ That is totally free and works quite well for most people.
Personally, I use NetLimiter (which you do have to pay for), because it offers more options.

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
Thanks guys :P
I'm using NetMeter, it's easy and that suits me just fine. I don't want something that's too fancy in case my computer goes into complete meltdown!
@Dogster - That's naughty you know

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
I was told by CS (or some other department) today that the people who were downgraded (including me) were detrimental to the ntl network, that they didn't want customers like me and that they would be limited to the 512k indefinitely, even when the new unlimited packages are launched.
So that sucks, but I will keep what I have because I have no other means of accessing the internet, I don't want the hassle of having a BT line installed to get ADSL.
Can't say i'm not dissapointed to hear that but I guess I should have taken note of the first letter.

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
I would strongly recommend BitMeter. This is easy to use, there are regular inprovements, an excellent customer service [advice etc] and it is FREE !
There is also a an on screen transparent window so that you can yourself download.

Re: *ALL* ntl Cap Discussion (Part 3)
I am now on 10mbit, took a 2mbit downgrade and then an upgrade to get their but it works and i am in Leeds Area, question I have tho is this the kind of speeds im expected to get ?
1st 128K took 234 ms = 560137 Bytes/sec = approx 4660 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 204 ms = 642510 Bytes/sec = approx 5346 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 234 ms = 560137 Bytes/sec = approx 4660 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 234 ms = 560137 Bytes/sec = approx 4660 kbits/sec
Not lookin good that not when its supposed to be 10mbit, not sure why its almost half tho.

Yep, those speeds are roughly 5meg, not 10. They do say 'up to', but even so, I'd hope for somewhat better than that. If I were you I'd do regular tests over a few days and see if it's constantly poor or if today is just getting a hammering from people trying out their new speed.

Are they bringing out some better unlimted packages. If so have you heard any details?

Yes. No.
I realise the question wasn't posed to me, but that's the short answer, anyway. They are going to be bringing out unlimited packages - sometime next year, we believe - but no one knows any details as of yet.

They didn't tell me, but from what they did tell me it won't matter to those who were downgraded as they will be locked into the 512K package for aslong as they remain with ntl.

That is our understanding as well - once you get put on that tier, you are stuck on it.

Let's hope so. But, anyway, yes. I've read many news items - it's all part of the service.
Unless I've become very confused, NTL will - at some stage, probably next year - be bringing out lower speed services with variable usage options. It's quite well known that some of these will probably be unlimited usage.
On one of NTL's presentations last year, it was mentioned - and this was just before the last set of upgrades - that a new £15.99 a month 300kbps service was to be launched.
This may no longer be the case, but I'd expect some sort of unlimited (granted, lower speed) option to surface sometime early next year.
Unless anyone knows any different?
