Well there are certainly better cards out there as itsa little old.
For a new PC, I wouldnt consider anything under a 9600 or 9800

Generally speaking, ATI's SE cards are 'crippled' versions for cheapness: pipelines closed, lower bandwidth memory, underclocked cores etc.

Cheers.
My friend plays a lot of Flight Simulator and his pc is an AMD64 3200 with 1gb or ram.
I think his gc is a huge bottleneck.
Do you agree and if so, what card would balance that system out well?
Cheers.

Re: How good or bad is a Radeon 9200se?
How good is a 9200SE for games playing...? It's pants, unless you're playing very, very old games. You didn't say which game in particular he's playing, but if it's a recent-ish game, then he'll be much better off with a more recent card. The rest of his spec is much more recent than the 9200se.... that card is state-of-the-ark.
He'll see a marked improvement by going with something such as 9800 Pro, which are relatively cheap now.

Re: How good or bad is a Radeon 9200se?
Yup, I'd say at least a 9800 Pro, with an AMD64 rig.
However, if it's a PCI Express mobo, like the OP's is, he'll need a PCI-E card. X700 at least would be favourite. Or the NVidia equivalent.
However, if a 9200SE is what he's running now, presumably it's an AGP mobo. 9800 Pro or better. As you say, Gareth, they're comparatively cheap now.

Buy Half Life 2. That should test your system out.

I have a 9200SE and it works perfectly with HL2, CS 1.6, CSS, MOH/AA/PA and COD:UO.

Theres gotta be an underlying reason why it crashes
The OP needs to ask the standard question. How much does his friend want to spend. He is asking about a 9200se which to be honest is obsolete and has been replaced by the 9250 range of cards costing only £25.Ano ther card to maybe look at in this price range is the 9600se this costs just £5 more, has in most cases twice the ram and twice the memory bandwidth.Nvidia appears to have nothing much in this price range(overclockers) So if the OP is seriously after a budget card he must realise he is only going to get budget performance. And in this range I would recommend the 9600se here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...00_Series.html 3rd down. As others have said if a high perfoming card is needed look here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...00_Series.html 4th down is an X700 for £65.The only 9800 pro they have is over a ton but im sure elsewhere you could get on for around £80

OK then, tell me what the average frame is when the resolution is set to 1024x768 or 1280x1024 and everything set to maximum (except AA and AF) when running HL2
