What i will say is that i am willing to bet Green reps that a ISP in the UK will start doing this within 12 months. It is just down to who has the guts to do it first. But mark my words after one has done it there will be a clamor for it as they will see £ signs from it.
Please don't quote me as saying NTL are or intend to do this as i do not know.

Bill just an observation why are most adverts for other BB on tv and radio upselling unlimited. They must have a market over other limited providers like NTL otherwise they would not advertise it.

Unlimited sounds good but what does it really mean? An ISP can offer unlimited 8 mbps broadband but may cram so many users onto its pipes that they may never get much more than dial-up speeds. There can also be many terms and conditions that prohibit a lot of uses of the connection and catch all terms such as "your usage must not affect the usage of any other customer". Many users think that if they have a 8 mbps unlimited connection that they can download anything they want and always get very near the 8 mbps but the truth can be very different.

Monitor SNMP port of router
or
Try not looking for excuses
Lets face it, making up excuses about how to monitor your usage is as worthless as telling a teacher them ( ;o ), you are still going to get 'punished'.

i bought a brand new d-link 4300 a few weeks before snmp was disabled it was an expensive one so buying a new router isn't an option for me.

Bill
Thats answering an observation with a question.
To be honest my own view is that the majority of users have got no idea of the cap and do not go over it .
Also it was just a knee jerk reaction when NTL had no money to provide the current users at the time with a decent service due to lack of funds to buy new equipment.
I refer the gentleman to the goodland tapes

If you apply that logic to the extreme they should be supplying us with protection against virus, hackers & any other nuisance you can think of out there & all for free.
They supply the connection, it's up to the customer to monitor themselves & always has been right back to the days of Bulletin Boards (the good old days).

This has been mentioned numerous times *sigh*
it costs money after 30 days
it is inaccurate for many reasons including :-
it measures lan traffic
it doesnt include a few traffic that ntl will measure at the router level
it relies on the consunmer to install and configure correctly

1 reason is because you dont clearly tell people it is capped.Hardly as marketable is it having bold letters in their TV adverts.
______________________________________________ e.g.
NTL come sign up with our LIMITED/CAPPED service
yeah they show you the 1-3mb speeds which do look good for the cost yet fail to show you cant really use those speeds for long (and you surely wont when the 10mb comes) but put limited next to an advert alongside someone elses like
AOL's come sign up with our UNLIMITED/UNCAPPED service and it looks like a poor mans option doesnt it.
(and dont show how cheap/nasty you are by replying if people dont look into details before they sign-up thats their fault, like some members here did last time I brought this false advertising scam up)
______________________________________________
Also with having loads who sign-up NTL also have loads who leave, and I'm sure theres gonna be heaps more.As the softcaps didnt stop most of us doing what we wanted with the connections we paid good money for NTL have changed their policy yet again and brought out the low speed uncapped service. Its 2nd time now theyve back tracked on caps I had a feeling if I along with most others carried on regardless of softcaps, they would come up with some other system of keeping my/our custom without kicking us from our connections.
Dont get me wrong I'll be happy with my £18pm unlimited 512k (Ive only had 1.5mb for a few months from the old 750k so no big deal least its cheaper and the U/L wont change much more than the 12kbs I currently get) its like an all you can eat buffet as long as the restaurant stays open 24-7 you'll do fine.
But everyone wont feel the same as me,once people start being dropped down to 512k unlimited I'm sure users will wake up and see other services offer better deals for costs/speeds and amount you can use.
Basicly its back to square one with what I alongside alot of users here signed up for back when we joined with nynex/cable and wireless all those years ago.Instead of the silly speeds ntl clearly can't afford to offer,or let people actually use most the time which sadly makes the idea of a solid 3mb-10mb speed pointless.Just a shame NTL have given with one hand and taken with the other so much since they took over,by putting everyones speeds+costs up yet not coped with people who wanted to use their new found fast connections.
