Wireless Connection but No Shared Internet

Hello,

I am using telewest broadband, motorola surfboard sb5101e and a belkin f5d7230-4 ver4000 router. At the moment I thought I could connect the computer to the modem directly via usb and then use the ethernet card to supply the router. However this does not work! I have read about just using the ethernet slot in the router but this doesn't work and I get no internet connection! Any ideas what's going wrong...btw in lamens terms please!!

Thanks

Re: Wireless Connection but No Shared Internet

Set the default gateway to the IP of the PC with the modem.

Otherwise use ethernet to connect the modem/router and wire the PC.

Re: Wireless Connection but No Shared Internet

Sorry to be a pain but how do I set the default gateway...is that via the belkin screen?

Re: Wireless Connection but No Shared Internet

Hi & to CF.

Some basics -
You can only plug one device into the modem at a time - ie router into ethernet port, PC into USB OR ethernet.
If you change devices, eg unplug router and plug in PC, you should reboot your modem (leave off for 20sec)
The router will have an ethernet port label WAN separate from the other four ethernet ports. The cable from the modem plugs in here.
Your PC should plug in to one of the four remaining ports.

I would recommend -
1. Turn all three off.
2. Plug in both ethernet cables, as above.
3. Turn on modem.
4. When modem lights settle, turn on router.
5. Start up PC.

With any luck it should work straight away.
You may need to login to the 'belkin screen', which should be described in the manual.

Re: Wireless Connection but No Shared Internet

I have tried that but when I connect the modem to the router via a patch cable there is no activity (shown by an led), does this mean my network card is not interacting with it? Could it be the usb drivers are not allowing the communication?

Re: Wireless Connection but No Shared Internet

Which activity LED - on the modem, router or network card?
What OS is the PC running? The USB drivers shouldn't affect the ethernet connection, but if you're not going back to USB you could follow http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...tml#usbdrivers to uninstall the USB drivers.

When all the devices plugged in and turned on above, can you browse to

http://192.168.2.1

This is the user interface of the Belkin.

If you can get there, can you also get to http://192.168.100.1/config.html - which is the Surfboard UI.

If not, can you post the results of 'ipconfig /all' and 'ping 192.168.2.1' from the PC.

Re: Wireless Connection but No Shared Internet

Hello,

Its running WIndows Media Center 2005 with all updates. The activity light on the modem and the modem light on the router do not come on when connected in the way above. I will try uninstalling the driver and see what happens.

Also I can access the belkin router screen. Its strange that when the modem is connected via usb and the router via ethernet I cannot access the internet.

Will get back to you with the results.

Thanks

This may be your problem - you should e connecting PC->router->Modem - there should be no USB at all - these modems will only support wither USB or Ethernet (IIRC) so try doing as follows:

power off modem,router and PC

DO NOT connect anything via USB.

Connect router WAN port to ethernet port on modem
Connect pc to ethernet LAN port on router

Power on modem - wait for ready status
Power on router - wait for ready status.
Power on PC - all should work now.

(in all - pretty much as Aragorn said - but with extra clarification)
