NTL Broadband download problems
Both my PC and laptop are connected to NTL Broadband, the latter via a wifi router and card and the former via a USB connection to the cable modem.
I can download whatever I want very efficiently via the laptop but if try to do the same using the desktop PC large files stop downloading when they are about 50/60% complete. I'd be very grateful for any help with this. Both machines are running Windows XP.

Re: NTL Broadband download problems
Try using an ethernet rather than a USB connection. One of the problems with USB connections is that they can 'run out of steam' so to speak.
AFAIK all ntl modems have an ethernet connector: are you connecting with your router connected to this and your PC separately connected to the USP connector? IMHO you'd be much better off running both through the router: even most wireless routers have ethernet ports as well.

Re: NTL Broadband download problems
Thanks for getting back so quickly folks. I've got the PC directly connected to the router with an ethernet cable now and although the indicator in the taskbar shows that teh connection is working, I can't get onto websites or email (even though the laptop is still fine via it's wifi card) so I've missed something out. Do you have any ideas?

have you tried turning everything off, then restart the modem & give it a chance to settle, then restart the router & again give it time to settle down, then boot the pc?

Re: NTL Broadband download problems
Hmm, yes I tried all that a few times: the LAN connection is fine and the router and cable modem are both working, have checked that the cable is properly connected (and have unplugged and replugged it) but still no internet connection on the PC. Any thoughts on what I could try next?

Re: NTL Broadband download problems
the only other thing I can think of is that your pc is still looking for an usb connection - did you remove the appropriate devices/drivers?

Re: NTL Broadband download problems
You did use a patch (straight through) and not a crossover cable, Jerry?
Can you see the laptop on your PC, and can the laptop see the PC?

Re: NTL Broadband download problems
I'm 99% sure it isn't a crossover cable - it came with the cable modem I think. Can't see the laptop from the PC or vice versa, but it's a work one which has a pretty ferocious firewall on it that I can't reconfigure. As I mentioned, the laptop is still happily talking to the cable modem via the router. If I swap back onto the USB cable rather than the ethernet the PC goes straight back online.
Thanks for sticking with this!
