FTP Upload Problem
Hi,
I am experiencing some difficulties connecting to the upload.ntlworld.com over ftp, to manage my webspace. I have been able to connect previously all be it a long time ago.
I have spoken to NTL support and they assure me it is working , the password and account is correct and they can log in from a pc at their end. I have tried from other PC's in other locations on different broadband connections and none of them were able to connect sucessfully.
I get the message :
Resolving host name "upload.ntlworld.com"
Connecting to 62.253.162.29 Port: 21
Connected to upload.ntlworld.com.
An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.
Server closed connection
If anyone can shed any light on this problem it would greatly appreciated. I did find an old thread from back in 2003 and the outcome was a problem at ntl's end.
Thanks

Re: FTP Upload Problem
No I am not using ntl connection at the moment I am at work, is this the problem do they have an IP range block or something? Never used to be a problem!
The software is SmartFTP, I have tried IE and command line FTP doesn't make any difference.
I have also had it connect and give a 530 invalid login a couple of times when on the phone to support.

Re: FTP Upload Problem
Never tried uploading to NTL from another ISP connection so I can't comment on whether it should work or not.
One thing comes to mind, though. Are you using Passive FTP Mode? It should be an option in your FTP s/w.
If you aren't using Passive Mode, then a firewall could block the connection if not configured to accept an inbound connection from the FTP server.

Re: FTP Upload Problem
Yes it doesn't make any difference if passive mode is on or off. I am sat behind a firewall or 2, I will be trying it from my ntl connection later.
Will be rather annoying if you can only access from an NTL connection, as I tend to have time to update when I am away from home.
I am also having a similar problem connecting to the pop.ntlworld.com. I can send out a test message from outlook but can't connect to download messages. Not so much of a problem as I can connect using the webmail, but still annoying as it definately used to work before I switched computers.

Re: FTP Upload Problem
I beleive you can only upload via ftp to your ntlspace when you are on an ntl connection. It's some sort of a security thing.
As for email, you should be able to connect and retrieve your emails OK from pop.ntlworld.com Check you have the right password and account names entered. Sending though, if you are not on an ntl connection would need to use the SMTP server of the ISP through which you currently connect, not ntl's. That's an antispam type thing.

Re: FTP Upload Problem
Yeh I have tested the ftp on an ntl connection and it works fine, however the guys at tech support seem to think it should work on a non ntl connection. Do you think its done on an IP address range?
As for the email can't recieve, I checked passwords etc, but can send a test message which seems to be a bit silly as you say usually you can't send unless you are on the isp's connection.

Re: FTP Upload Problem
You should definitely be able to d/l email from pop.ntlworld.com using another ISP connection. This I do all the time.
Could be that your company's firewall is blocking communications.

It doesn't. Helps to prevent, for example, foreigners getting access to accounts and using them to host pr0n.

Re: FTP Upload Problem
They than changed it a long time ago so that you can only upload from an ntl range of IP's - this has been like it for over 4 years now, i remeber when they did it as i was there (used to work for ntl) but this was on the virgin.net side of things when they went free as people were signing up loads of fake accounts purely for hosting illegal stuff
