Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

To save me more DVD coasters, i downloaded the official DVD version of the above (title) but it's not an ISO and won't boot

Tried adding Nero's patch to it but all it does is boot into Caldero dos.

Can somebody please explain how to boot into linux from DVD? I have Nero installed if that helps

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

You Burn the Image by going to Recorder->Burn Image and select the ISO file, it could be cue/bin but thats unusual for a Linux Distro.

The combined live/install DVD is only available via Bittorrent, so it's possible that the download became corrupt. Assuming Azureus or whatever downloaded it correctly however, it is definitely an ISO, and Nero should have no trouble whatsoever burning it to a DVD.

What extension is the file you have? If it's .iso, what happens when you try and burn it in Nero?

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

It's not an iso but it downloaded the complete disk structure as one huge rar file. Unpacking it doesn't give me the expected r01 etc. but rather the complete filesytem such as .disk, bin, casper and so on. Been frantically searching around for a floppy boot to no avail

Swine took ages to download as well!

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

Do you need a combined install/live CD?

Ubuntu are sending out free CD copies of the Install & Live media - mine only took a few weeks to swim across the pond!

Haven't tried the install version yet, but LiveCD seems to work well.

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

The file in question is ubuntu-5.05-dvd-i386 and reports as a winrar archive. Clicking it doesn't show me and sign of an iso image but burning it and running on windows gives me the option of windows installable progs such as Gimp, firefox etc. so i don't think it's a corrupt download?

Is there a do all type of boot floppy i can use somewhere?

Good news. It's working! If you run the disk from Windows, it gives you the option of installing (Windows versions of) various Free software programmes, such as Firefox, Openoffice and the Gimp.

You have to set your computer to boot from CD in order to actually run or install Ubuntu. To do this, you will need to press a key (usually delete, or sometimes F2, but it may be different according to your motherboard) as soon as your computer starts up. Then find the menu option for "1st boot device" (or something similar), and change it to your CD drive. Be careful not to change any other options though, as messing about with the BIOS can easily screw up your system.

If you need any more help, there are plenty of very experience people on this forum who'd be glad to give you the benefit of their (Linux or other) knowledge

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

Bad news. It's not! First thing i did was was to boot from my dvd drive(s) to no avail. Hence why i think i'm going to need a boot disk.

I must just also add that i know how to create a dvd from iso's 'cause i've done a few in my time

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

Well I'm reading this now from Ubuntu but I cant say I'm that impressed. I guess the speed is due to the fact it's reading everything from CD but it's very plain looking.

Can't say I'll bother to install it though

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

Shabba, first thing I would do if I was you is check whether the file you downloaded is corrupt using the md5 checksum. There are loads of utilities you can use to check it.

Yeah, the live CD version is slower than a full installation, in part because it has to load every programme off the CD drive, and also because there's no HDD swap space available, and RAM is a lot tighter than on a regular system.

Other than how it looks (and I also dislike the default brown), why else have you decided not to install it? What would it take for you to use Ubuntu instead of Windows?

I'm not criticising, I'm just curious

Apologies, I didn't mean to patronise.

It does sound like a corrupt CD though -- the ISO should definitely be bootable by just burning it in Nero -- no patches need be applied.

Out of curiousity, can your computer able to boot from other CDs? I know some (older) BIOS/drive combinations can have trouble with this.

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

My computer has no problems booting from dvd (knoppix boots no problem). I very much doubt the download is corrupt as winrar would have complained along with the fact that i can autorun it from windows and can see every part of the directory structure.

And again (aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrhhhhhh), it's not an iso that i downloaded It's what i expected but not what i got!

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

Haven't downloaded the DVD version cause I've not got access to a DVD burner at the moment... what did it download then, if it's not an ISO?

Re: Ubuntu linux live/installable DVD edition

Ok! Got this sussed now. Zeph gave me a clue when he mentioned winrar reading iso's. Like a dick i was copying the file structure onto dvd hence the coasters Solution got rid of winrar and windows correctly showed it as an iso file

A few tips (should add to the linux knowledge base i s'pose), make sure you turn off plug and play support in bios before you try to boot it up! Secondly, make sure you have no other cd's/dvd's in other drives. This confused ubuntu to no end and halted the boot process

Thank's to all who helped it was much appreciated
