Anger over cancer ad censorship

I really don't believe this one...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4298076.stm

Quote:
Campaigners are criticising a radio watchdog's decision to only allow a prostate cancer ad starring comedy star Ricky Gervais to be aired after 9pm.

The Prostate Cancer Charity ad features a doctor inserting a finger inside a man's rectum to check for cancer.

The Radio Advertising Clearance Centre, which governs commercial radio, has also ordered the removal of a "squish" noise from the advert.

I think it's wholly appropriate to put that after the 9 o'clock 'watershed'.

That's not to say I'd like them to be prudish on the issue, yet I don't really see that anyone fancies having to explain it to their offspring because the TV chose to put it in their faces.

Re: Anger over cancer ad censorship

Having listened to that Ad (see BBC links above), I find it far less distasteful than many of the government sponsored ads you get, ad nauseum, for things like anti smoking. The one a few months ago with the wheexing emphasima patient breaths was excrutiating. Simply put if the Gervais advert is censored, then many more should go the same way.

Even simpler then - we can have a 09:00 watershed - kids don't bother to tune in after that anyway!

(testicular )

The fact is that all too many men will either not bother to check (cos feeling yourself up is gay, right?) or be to 'embarrased' to go to the docs etc.

Well, I'm not too embarrased to die, so I'll fondle all I like to be sure and if I have any doubts I'll check with the doc.

But I'd like there to be a bit more 'publicity' so that more men would feel just as comfortable about it all as I do.

(I'll add - when I was much younger, I detected a 'lump' on my chest/breast.
As it was, it turned out to be benign, but it was a surprise to me to discover that 'breast cancer' is not exclusive to women...)

Re: Anger over cancer ad censorship

Personally i don't think there is anything wrong with the ad but as with all things the good old censor has his/her way and decides for us. Anyway hopefully the storm this has brewed will prompt some people into getting checked out!!

I don't think that is the issue!! It can only go out after 9pm because that ad has been deemed to graphic!! They've censored the ad not the issue of Prostate Cancer!!
