External Soundblaster live! 24bit external won't install

Either on my mate's laptop or my desktop.

You plug it in and get the ding dong usb noise.

However, when you run the driver software it says there are no compatible devices attached.

My mate said it suddenly stopped working one day. Broken?

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Re: External Soundblaster live! 24bit external won't install

Doesn't that require you to install the driver software first, then plug in the usb device after a prompt?

Re: External Soundblaster live! 24bit external won't install

No because it wants to find the hardware as it installs.

Thanks Marky, found that 30 minutes ago, it's the install instructions I can't locate anywhere, even on creatives on site, only instructions are the 24 internal card.
Trying to find out for Mcgraw what to suggest?

That's for software/drivers etc but not installation information, looks like we're both hitting the same brick wall, sad to say!

If this was just happening on one machine I would be looking at the usb bus as the problem. Mcgraw when you Tried on your desktop did you plug it into an I/O port or into a usb on the front of your case. There is a chance its not getting enough power. Just a hunch may be totally off the mark

Re: External Soundblaster live! 24bit external won't install

Cheers for that marky, great work

McGraw, just been reading the installation instructions that marky found, so some questions for you:
1) On your PC, I assume you have USB support enabled in bios?
2) Assuming yes, on the soundblaster external, does the power LED light up in blue when connected by the USB cable?
reading the details marky found, I'll transfere them here, in case you may have missed something:
Installing and Uninstalling Software

You need to install device drivers and applications before using your Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit. The instructions below apply to all supported Windows operating systems.
Installing Drivers and Applications

  • After you have installed your audio device, turn on your computer. Windows automatically detects your audio device and searches for device drivers.
  • When prompted for the audio drivers, click the Cancel button.
  • Insert the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External Installation and Applications CD into your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.
If Windows AutoPlay mode is enabled for your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, the CD starts running automatically. If not, you need to enable your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive's auto-insert notification feature. For more details, see Problems Installing Software.
Alternatively, from your Windows desktop, click Start -> Run and type d:\ctrun\start.exe (replace d:\ with the drive letter of your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive)

  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
  • When prompted, restart your computer.

Uninstalling or Reinstalling Applications and Device Drivers

At times you may need to uninstall or reinstall some or all of the audio applications and device drivers to correct problems, change configurations, or upgrade outdated drivers or applications. The following instructions tell you how to do so in all Windows operating systems.

Before you begin, close all the audio applications. Applications that are still running during the uninstallation will not be removed.
Reinstalling all Audio Drivers and Applications

  • Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  • Click the Install/Uninstall tab (or Change or Remove Programs button).
  • Select the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External entry, and then click the Add/Remove (or Change/Remove) button.
  • In the InstallShield Wizard dialog box, select the Repair option.
If prompted, insert the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External Installation and Applications CD into your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, and click the OK button.

  • Click the Yes button.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
You can now check if the reinstalled software works properly. If not, see Troubleshooting and FAQs.
Uninstalling all Audio Drivers and Applications

  • Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  • Click the Install/Uninstall tab (or Change or Remove Programs button).
  • Select the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External entry, and then click the Add/Remove (or Change/Remove) button.
  • In the InstallShield Wizard dialog box, select the Remove option.
  • Click the Yes button.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
You may now install existing or updated Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External device drivers or applications. For more information, see Installing/Uninstalling selected Audio Drivers or Applications.
Installing/Uninstalling selected Audio Drivers or Applications

  • Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

If you want to install an application, click the application check box to select it.

  • Click the Next button.
If prompted, insert the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External Installation and Applications CD into your CD-ROM, and click the OK button.

  • Restart your computer when prompted.
