Re: tons and tonnes

if you take 1lb = 0.454kg

then 2240*0.454=1016.96

According to BS 350 (admittedly the ancient 1962 edition), 1 lb = 453.59237 g.
Therefore the long ton of 2240 pounds = 1016.0469088 kg, which is better than to the nearest mg.

Is this close enough?

Re: tons and tonnes

To get really pedantic, taking 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg

2240lb = 1016.0469088 kg

(bet you wish you'd never started this, Marky )

[Edit] Damn, beaten to it!

Actually, I suppose we ought to quote the conversion to the same number of sig figs, namely 8, which gives us a miserly 1016.0469 kg.

Re: tons and tonnes

Quote:

Avoirdupois measure 1 gross ton = 1 long ton = 2240 pounds
1 net ton = 1 short ton = 2000 pounds
1 pound = 16 ounces = 7000 grains
1 ounce = 16 drachms = 437.5 grains

1 long ton = 20 hundredweight
1 hundredweight = 4 quarters = 112 pounds
1 quarter = 2 stone = 28 pounds
1 quintal = 100 pounds

Standard measure 1 tonne = 1 metric ton
1 tonne = 1000 kilograms
1 kilograms = 1000 grams

Now i have headache! I hate weights and measures!!

Re: tons and tonnes

And it has just struck me. Why is an Imperial to metric conversion considered as entertainment?

Offhand, the only humorous unit that I can think of is the barn. This is 10^-24 sq cm, is used as a unit of cross section for nuclear reactions, and is so called because it is as big as a barn door for most nuclear reactions.

Re: tons and tonnes

And I suppose that the latest metric prefixes, zepto and yocto, could be considered amusing. Somehow, I can't really take a yoctogramme very seriously.
