Help with speed problems in Ipswich area
Using 3meg service but last night noticed about 30% drop in upload and dowload speed. Up 23.8 KB/sec Down 239.5 KB/sec.
Did usual checks rebooted modem and PC, cleared cache, ran spyware progs and antivirus etc no improvement.
This morning still slow so rang BB help and they said there was a problem in IP3 and 4 which was being worked on.
This evening still slow so rang BB help and told there is no problem and that my speeds were perfectly acceptable for a 3 meg connection! By my calculation this is little more than 2 Meg speed.
Can anyone help please?

How did Tech Support come to this conclusion?
Try this speed test, & post back your results (make sure you're not up/downloading anything else when you run the test).
 to the site too.

Re: Help with speed problems in Ipswich area
Thanks Neil, downloads mainly from BBC, FTP servers etc..
The tech support said they ran some tests on the modem both in normal and safe mode said it was ok.
results:
Wed, 10 Aug 2005 18:18:53 UTC
1st 128K took 500 ms = 262144 Bytes/sec = approx 2181 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 499 ms = 262669 Bytes/sec = approx 2185 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
Had similar problems 18 months ago and techs said all ok and finally offered to send engineer at my cost if no fault found, they found levels in the street cabinet had "wandered" and modem being overloaded (we are less than 10metres from box) Did not charge in the end!!
Thanks for your help

Re: Help with speed problems in Ipswich area
That was my impression but maths was never my best subject!!
The lady was called Rashmi and assured me that this was very good for a 3 meg connection!! She had me using the us.mcafee.com speed test and that was showing what I thought was 2 meg!!
Any suggestions how to take it forward?
Cheers

Ring them back & ask them to put you on the service you are paying for.

'Fraid not.
How long have you been getting 2 meg speeds instead of the 3 meg you are paying for?

They are open untill 12pm
call them on 0845 650 0121 or 0925
Open a browser window and go to 192.168.100.1 password and user id are root click on operation configuration check what the following read
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000 bps

Re: Help with speed problems in Ipswich area
Hi Maverick
I have tried the 192.168.100.1 in IE6 and it just comes up as unavailable, we are using the old Terrayon TJ210 modem.
I will give the BB Support a try on one of those numbers.
Thanks for you help.

Re: Help with speed problems in Ipswich area
Hi
Contacted Swansea on the 650 0121 number and they were very helpful, said the modem was showing as being on 3 Meg but the service it was allocated was only 2 meg, a change on the modem and we are now back up to speed.
Hooray..but who flicked the switch?? Will we ever find out? I doubt it.
Neil and Maverick once again thanks for all your help.

Re: Help with speed problems in Ipswich area
Last night connection slowed down again, speed test results almost identical to before.
Rang BB Tech Support got through to India and explained the problem and they confirmed that the service had again been reduced from 3 Meg to 2 Meg. She had to get supervisor to reset speed to 3 meg.
Rang customer services and they agreed to give me 3 months broadband at half price as compensation for inconvenience.
I am still wondering why the speed is being knocked back like this. Anyone got any ideas?
