Unusual hotmail problem

Reloading windows appears to have resolved most of my pc problems...hooray! But after 7 days a new and rather irritating problem has appeared.

Last night I discovered that if I put things in hotmail trash and empty the trash can, the mesages are still there if you go back into it. A wait of 10 minutes or refreshing the page resolves this. OK, that I can live with, but.....

Also yesterday I get three messages, lets call them for the sake of example 1, 2 and 3. I go into my inbox and open and read number1, then click on the link top right to return to inbox. I then open and read number2 and click on the link to return to inbox.

At this point the inbox is showing me that yes, number1 is opened, but that number 2 is still unread.......it cant be, I've just opened it!!! Again refreshing the page solves this. Opening e mail number 3 and then returning to inbox again shows 3 as still unopened.

I've asked hotmail about this, no reply. It seems that all my other email addresses are ok, it's just hotmail, so can anyone assist as the support staff appear to be ignoring me.

As an aside, on a day like today I realise this is very trivial and to any of you who may have friends or relatives in London, my thoughts are with you.

Re: Unusual hotmail problem

Sounds like yet another proxy problem.

Try changing the proxy and see if the problem persists.

cheers

Re: Unusual hotmail problem

I have noticed a similar niggle in Hotmail in so far as I cannot view more than 3 e-mails one after the other. The up and down arrows dissapear on the third message.

Re: Unusual hotmail problem

You were right, I went into Internet Properties- Connections and put on a server which is a non NTL one ( I realise stuff will still go through NTLs servers anyway) and it solved the problem.

One thing concerns me, when I do a Sygate Security scan, without this proxy it shows all ports blocked. With the proxy on, it shows some open but my IP address is different. I'm assuming it's reading the proxy here??? I wouldn't want to take any security risks having finally got this wretched computer just about running as it should. There are, after all, other e mail providers.

Actually, looking back on my previous PC woes 2 factors seem to run constant. AOL software left behind even when I left them and NTL / Proxy ruddy servers.........

Re: Unusual hotmail problem

Seems to be a bit of a pain hotmail, I should say in a relation to my previous posting here about security concerns that I do run a firewall and AV(bullguard) and anti spyware (microsoft) so I dont imagine that putting a non NTL proxy in the LAN box of Internet Properties will be unsafe, I just wanted to check.

On the other hand, I am pretty impressed with G Mail and its only sheer laziness and being used to it that prevents me from ditching hotmail entirely...all my contacts know that address and are used to it too. Maybe time for a change though.

Re: Unusual hotmail problem

I use Incredimail for all my NTL as well as Hotmail e-mail. Perhaps Gmail will do similar?

I just check hotmail from time to time to empty the junk mail.

Uhhh guys....

Hotmail is a MICROSOFT product!

As you ought to know by now, any Bill Gates product is inherantly liable to bugger up.

Re: Unusual hotmail problem

Yeah, I like hotmail though, it's kind of familiar. The trouble is, I've been told by several sources that running proxy servers can be unsafe, especially non NTL ones.

Previously I was on this forum every other week with one problem or another. Now, after a reload of Windows, things are looking much better. No more Packard Bell or AOL rubbish on my PC but security is a big thing obviously. If using a non NTL proxy is safe then fine, otherwise if that's the only way I can get hotmail to behave, I'll ditch it and use Gmail. I just need to know about the security aspect really.

Re: Unusual hotmail problem

Depends on which Proxy you are using regarding the security.
Did you try any other NTL ones before trying one outside of the network ?

Also bear in mind that proxies from outside of the NTL network may close at any time.

Its a shame we have to make technical changes ourselves just to use NTL's service as advertised, but you'll find that sadly the proxies fail on many sites
