Re: Can You Help Me Choose Between a Desktop PC and a Laptop??

Thanks MovedGoalPosts!!

One query still remains. The free printer!! Still deciding whether or not to use it and give my old one to my niece along with the computer. I know that its Dell branded BUT it's obviously a Lexmark!! The instructions tell you to order replacements from Dell, but Im wondering if a Lexmark branded cartridge would do the job??

If anyone could give any advice on this, I'd be very grateful!! By the way, the model number of this printer is Dell Colour Inkjet Printer 720. It's a top loading printer (which I dont like - since the days I had an Epson 300 Series!!)

Any clues??

James

Difficult to say. Easy answer would be to print the a few copies of the same thing, maybe a photo, a letter, etc on the two different printers, check the results and see what they look like. Use the better printer.

If it is a rebadged Lexmark cartridges wil probably work OK. Cost of one is small, if you can work out a match.

Ah maybe you can't use Lexmark cartridges:

Unfortunately you can not use the cheaper Lexmark branded inkjet cartridges in your Dell inkjet printer as Dell have decide to put a different moulded cap on top of the Lexmark branded cartridges (this prevents you from using the cheaper Lexmark branded inkjet cartridges in your dell printer

think these links show equivilents

Personally I would sell it on and buy either an epson or canon these do not have print heads fitted to the res so they can be modified enough by compatable compaines asto not infringe patent,so there a lot cheaper to buy compatables

Re: Can You Help Me Choose Between a Desktop PC and a Laptop??

Once again, thanks for your help guys!!

Tried printing off a few things with the Dell printer - definately was not impressed!! Seemed very grainy (is that a word)??

Anyhow, Have agreed to give this to a family member who requires a basic printer. Also, I've given my existing printer (HP Deskjet 950C) away with the old computer to my niece!! Tried to find a printer that would work with the Windows 98 system with a parallel port connection - couldn't find one!! Bearing in mind that my niece is 5 years old and survives solely to visit the Cbeebies website, she is extremely exited at the prospect of getting her own computer (even if it is to tide her over until they can afford a new one!!) Makes you feel good to see someone so enthusiastic and grateful for something that you no longer have a use for!!

We decided to buy an all in one printer (because the existing scanner was incompatible with the new one. Ended up buying a Hewlett Packard PSC1315. Am I impressed or what??!! Extremely fast as regards to scanning, copying and printing (and you dont even need to connect it to the computer to copy something - good if you're in a rush!!!!!). It cost us £84.99 in Argos but this seems cheap to me for what you're getting (they also had the PSC1350 but I found out that this was no longer a current product from HP - they dont make it anymore).

Zings right, We only use canon printers in our family now as the carts are dirt cheap. Unlike most other makes, my old lexmark were £20 plus. Talk about a rip-off.

Re: Can You Help Me Choose Between a Desktop PC and a Laptop??

As far as I, and a lot of other people are concerned, the ONLY two reasons for getting a laptop are:

1) if you need a portable PC or
2) if space is very limited

Desktops give you far more bang per buck, and are far easier to upgrade.

And others have said, for gaming, really it is only the desktop PC that will play the latest games to a decent standard.

You can buy things called shuttle PCs which are PCs in a shoe-box sized case, but I wouldn't go down that route. Buy a desktop but be clever with the way you have everything stored.
