Are you on dialup?

Re: Keeping internet connecton active whilst PC is in standby mode

I am connected to the internet via a PCI card on the PC which turns the connection off when it goes into standby mode

Re: Keeping internet connecton active whilst PC is in standby mode

right so you connect via an ethernet card to some sort of modem?

Gotcha. Open Device Manager in the usual way.

Under "Network Adapters" right-click the one you connect via and select Properties

Advanced tab, click "link down Power Saving" and select "Disable" and then Ok through!

Re: Keeping internet connecton active whilst PC is in standby mode

As nffc says, but the tab is called "Power management" and has two boxes that need unticking. I would disable power management completely in Control Panel.

Not with you mate. I used mine to look for the setting- it's definitely in Advanced on mine!

Control Panel should have a Power Management option where you can set the timings. Set everything to "never".

Standby was on after 25 minutes of PC being idle, I have now turned it off completely. Thanks for all the help.

XP Home, SP2. here's a screenshot...

And i wouldn't really want to turn off power management- talk about saving fossil fuels

Re: Keeping internet connecton active whilst PC is in standby mode

Michelle, a couple of questions:

Are you on Broadband or Dial up?

Is the PC the only device attached to the modem?

If the PC is the only device attached to the modem, then why do you need an active internet connection if the PC is in standby mode (you certainly wouldn't be able to use it if the PC is the only Internet access device)?

Ah - not sure that does the same thing

Power management - saves on electricity, so less burning of fossil fuels, which is good, but the process of heating/cooling components, and spinning up/down the hard disk, over time, accelerates wear, so you fill landfill sites. Tough choice - more waste, less pollution, or more pollution, less waste.

Re: Keeping internet connecton active whilst PC is in standby mode

I thought "link down" referred to the cable being unplugged or other network fault causing loss of connectivity. Card detects this and powers down.

I thought all cards had a "Power Management" tab but clearly not. Just checked my Realtek and no tab - though the OS is Windows 98 SE.
