Re: Google Earth?

Aghhhhhhh This blows chunks.

24 hours and I still cant get in.

You'd think if they were gonna launch a beta they would have been better prepared for it. **** poor organisation on thier part.

Well I wonder, if I wanted to pay for it could I? after all I can log on to authenticate how the feck can I pay for it?

I reckon this little disaster will end up costing them customers.

Highly ridiculous and pathetic on par with governmental cock ups.

Jesus christ, try to compress your images next time.
That first one was 1456.86 kB.

Hint: Use jpg for real-life images such as photos, png for logos and anything else with straight lines/low level of detail.

Re: Google Earth?

There's a new beta version of Google Earth out if anyone wants it
http://earth.google.com/index.html
Google Earth Download
What's new?
Quote:
Changes between Beta1 (June 28th) and Beta2 (July 14th)

Bug fixes
- crash on ATI Radeon 7000-series cards when editing lines/polygons
- in rare cases, fullscreen/F11 would do nothing
- Layer icons would fail to draw when offline (Plus/Pro only)
- running on restricted XP accounts with 8bit (eg: accent characters) usernames would fail
- changing icons in a folder of placemarks via "share styles" would appear to work, but then revert when saved to a file.
- network link now fetches kmz files correctly, as long as server sets mime type correctly
- editing icon of a folder would sometimes crash
- using IMG SRC inside a description did not work with GIF files
- installing Pro on a machine using administrator and then running on a restricted account would sometimes hide the version number as PR3.0.XXXX
- embedded web browser would sometimes crash on Windows 2000
- uninstall shortcut didn't work on Windows 2000
- Matrox graphics cards (G400/G500) had problems with OpenGL, but weren't
allowed to run in DirectX. DirectX is now recommended and they work much better.
- some very rare crashes while flying
- exiting while a long search was in progress would crash
- using a GIF as an icon would fail
- several movie maker bugs have been fixed

Cosmetic Changes
- improved default_myplaces.kml file with Seer's 18 placemarks
- "Email Placemark" instead of "Email KMZ"
- ctrl-Z as an accelerator for click-n-zoom mode was confusing to too many people (who were trying to undo). Removed it.
- added method to clear search history (in the Edit menu)
- changed wording in Start Menu

Remaining recently discovered problems
- GPS devices: Garmin USB support seems flaky. COM->USB support
depends on quality of adaptor
- at high latitudes, not enough labels for North/South running streets
are drawn
- icons at altitude do not get exaggerated by elevation exaggeration,
sometimes disappear underground.

Re: Google Earth?

was playing with this last Friday.. it's pretty good but is still too US, UK based.. type in Spain or Lanzarote and it doesn't know where you are talking about.. Budapest is listed but no other towns in Hungary are..

some of the pics are really good and can only see this getting better.. the links to businesses, hotels, restaurants etc only really seems to work for the US with one or two done in London and Uk

was able to zoom in on Disney World in Florida which was pretty good..

again the siteseeing bit only covers US with Eiffel tower listed as well

Well it is Beta and to be honest it was probably produced by people in the US, hopefully Google will start inputting more high res images for other countries and everyone will be able to play "spot my house"
There are some nice image links to be found in the support forum for it

Re: Google Earth?

I think the problem is that it is relatively expensive to get a satellite to fly over somewhere and take a picture. This is probably why Google seems to concentrate on the more heavily populated areas (more chance people will want photos of big cities, so more photos will be taken). They seem to be improving though. I used a version of the software from keyhole technologies a couple of years back and the images (quality and coverage) have improved massively.

Re: Google Earth?

Getting back to google EARTH I notice that the area around Sidney's Olympic village and stadiums is of a very much higher resolution than the rest of Sidney or Ozzyland.I wonder who was that interested in such high res piccy's?

I'm still looking for The Opera House though. The stupid search engine is so crap...
